Anyone ever have a problem with their 20D shutting off by itself? I turned it off, then back on and it worked fine, but it sort of scared me.

Did you have a battery grip fitted?
as recently read another post on here about the grip contacts loosing conection hence shutting down camera .
only a thought.

Yes, I get a random 'stoppage' at times. Sometimes I have to pop the battery to clear it. I have seen a '99' and had it get mad because it could not find focus with the Sigma BigMa, the 99 was with my 17-85 IS kit lens. Mine has no real rhyme nor reason, I just clear it and go. I am at the 9K files shot and have seen it perhaps 5 times in one form or another

No, I didn't have any grip on it, just the 580 mounted. I did get a error 99 once with a 85/1.8 and had to take the battery out to get it to shut down, but this time it was like it was shut off with the power switch in the on position. Makes me really miss the all mechanical cameras.

It's like a grown up industrial strength version of the 300D, I really like it. The large buffer's a huge advantage, and I really missed it when I was taking fireworks photos with the 300D (had to use the 300D because the shutter release cable's different). It gives you more control too, and the JPGs that come out just look better than the 300D.

Do you have the camera function set that turns it off automatically after a predertimed amount of time of not being in use?

I think I just have it set so it goes to sleep after a minute or so. At any rate, it had always started up in the past, when I pressed the shutter button.
