Ok, let's say that while I'm waiting for my truck to get outta the repair shop, I want to take a picture of a flower (or my cat, or a person) and I want the subject in focus, but I don't want the background in focus. Other than using a Macro setting, how would I configure the A590? I know a little bit about F stops and a little less of everything else.

Set the camera to Aperture Priority, or meter manually with the widest possible aperture set. And search for a composition that lets you achieve maximum distance between the flower and its background (the most important part with any PowerShot-class camera).

Using the maximum zoom also helps to increase background blur.
