View Full Version : Canon DSLR Speed Challenge #68 - Long Exposure

Back288

I chose this weeks challenge because it's a technique I've always wanted to attempt, but have not tried as of yet (sorry, I have no sample pictures to post:(). Use your entries to inspire us all to try it! Since I couldn't put it better myself, I'm going the route of a previous Challenge poster, and shamelessly borrow the definition from Wikipedia:

"Long exposure photography is a technique that requires a slow shutter speed to capture light and movement."

So let's see your "soft water" shots, creatively blurred model movements, light trails, images of "ghosts", writing with a flashlight, or anything else that took a good, sturdy tripod, and longer than normal exposure to capture!

This competition is all about having a bit of fun. Be creative and give it your best shot! Posting will end at 9pm CST Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008 and Winners will be announced as soon as possible after the contest has closed.

Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 9pm CST Tuesday September 23rd, 2008
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

First I just want you all to know, I really, seriously hoped to never win one of these Speed Challenges; I never, ever wanted to have to pick a winner out of these wonderful entries. Thank you to everyone who entered, all of these images are spectacular and all deserve to win. These are all great examples of what you can do with longer exposures, everything was here from the sensation of motion, to amazing colors, to spectacular lighting. After studying the entries for more than an hour and not getting any closer to picking a winner, I've decided to just go with the ones that "jumped out" at me just ever-so slightly more than the rest, seriously, this was like a 16-way tie for first place. You folks really have to keep these images handy for the next round of book submissions! So here are my top 3 in reverse order:

3rd place: d0nutd0n - Great compostion, stunning colors with the neon lights and the change in shade from red to orange to yellow on some of the light trails, super sharp...spectacular shot.

2nd place: mellowd - Beautiful colors, spectacular composition, stunning location, and really great motion with the star trails. This should be enlarged as big as possible and hanging on a wall prominently displayed!

1st place: paintmblak - My eye just kept going back to this one, I really liked the soft quality of the water and sense of motion. Not to mention the great composition and depth of colors in the water and rocks. Congratulations and GOOD LUCK picking the next challenge and winners...it's hard!

Congratulations to all for capturing such spectacular images! After seeing these I really can't wait to try these techniques, and just hope my results are even a fraction of the quality of these shots!

OMG!! I won?? I won!!! Thank you, Thank you!! I am glad you liked it. I forgot to mention in my details that it was taken hand held using the bridge rail to brace myself. I have 2 tripod's and a monopod & never took any of them on this particular outing. lol
Thanks so much & I will be posting a new game shortly. :) (Wow, I won!!) ;)
