here's the deal:
just got done shooting about 3 hours worth of jewelry for a client. previews on-camera are fine and look great! uploaded all files to my PB G4 1GHz 15" running 10.3.7 and had no issues with the transfer. took a few more shots at a friends house and uploaded them as well. all shots were in RAW format.

when i tried to look at the shots on the PB in Photoshop CS, the File Browser displayed the shots, but then the thumbnails started to go black. when i tried to open them, got an error message that the application could not make a preview. tried the other shots, and the same message came up, with the thumbnails going dark in the FIle Browser. i looked at past RAW files and they displayed okay and opened fine.tried to open the files in both EOS Viewer Utility and File Viewer Utitlity with the thumbnails appearing but the files not getting a preview or opening.

i'm using a 1.5 yr-old Canon 10D with firmware 2.0.1 update and a 1GB CF card that is 2 months old. has anyone had problems like these before? NEED HELP!

This could very likely be the card. Not sure what to suggest though, but I had a similar problem and it was a bad card. You might want to focus on that and see if you can find anyhting

i thought that might be it so i tried another card that i've been using before. same thing; the preview thumbnail is great, but the file itself won't materialize in Photoshop or any of Canon's File Viewers. i shot a few test images in JPEG mode as well; no good. i've also checked the metadata and the file size and everything seems to be in order. the only changes i've made to the scenario are upgrading to Panther from Jaguar and the most recent RAW plugin from Adobe—all of which are compatible with my system and camera...

A friend of mine started to have this same problem with a Mac when he tried to download some stuff. SInce I'm Windows oriented all I could do was suggest that he re-boot the computer and try again. He did that and it worked fine.

I assume the camera thumbnails look good in the camera, right? When you view the full image in the 10D does it look okay? Are you downloading from the camera or a reader? If the images in the camera seem fine, then the data is becoming corrupted when you transfer it to the computer. Try a different USB port. Don't use a hub. Try a different method for copying the files. Turn off any external drive caching. Have you added any new devices on the computer? Any new drivers?

Just a few ideas off the cuff...

Good luck,
Dan

I have this similar problem but not on camera but on hard drive. Be careful because the files do go corrupt after a while. This may be a case of a faulty Flash card. In my case it is with the hard drive deteroriating. The JPG images including RAW are being eaten away. I've compared the file size (CD vs. HD) and is the same. I yet to do a binary comparison and see what is happening. Replace your card with another one and see if it is happening. What brand of CF card are you using?

well kids, i found out the reason my files got screwed up.

turns out the card reader i was using (Dazzle's 6-in-1) is NOT supported in Panther 10.3.7. so my camera was recording everything correctly and the card was reading/storing everything fine, but the reader was shizzit. so i broke down and cried for a few seconds and then straightened up and drove immediately to the store; picked up a removable bus card reader (faster and more compatible) and a new 1GB card. thanks to everyone who wrote in on my mini-meltdown!

ps - the re-shoot is set for this weekend...

If you buy multi use devices, you have to load software drivers. Ergo, you add problems. Buy single use devices and all you should have to do is plug it into the USB port and the system will find it. NO DRIVERS needed. So.......when you upgrade software, you won't run into these problems because your OS is the only thing contoling the device.

Try running Scandisk on the card. That MIGHT recover some of the data:(

I had the same problem after shooting a wedding. I was fraked out, after all the B&G flew me from Portland SF California. Anyway, I rebooted the computer first before trying anything else and the problem went away. I have sinced used the same card on a dozen more weddings...Dean
