I took this picture of a duck (these are very common here) swimming on the Mosel-River.
It is only slightly cropped so that the duck isn't a too centered...
20D with 75-300 USM at 300mm
f/11 (because that's where this lens is sharpest...)
1/320 sec
ISO400

is it a mallard?
the colours on the beak and all over are gorgeous
also the water looks great
I never saw a mallard with a yellow beak {I don't think so anyway}http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
why I wondered

Love the vividness (is that a real word) of the bill. Don't all mallards have yellow beaks?

Damian you are right
I just opened my gallery and completely by coincidence
up came a shot of a duck I took .
I wasn't even looking for one as I was doing something somewhere else on that site
it's a picture of a mallard and it's beak is yellowhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
I completely forgot
I had it in my mind that they had brown beaks for some reasonhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
even though I saw this photo a few hours ago when I was moving it on the site before I saw Ikinaa's shot.... it didn't strike me about the beak
must be because Ikinaa's made a better impact
I know I saw ducks on the canal a few days ago and they did not have yellow beaks.
must be younger
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif or the black sheep's of the family

Marie and Damian : Thanks for the kind replies.
I must say that I'm very bad at knowing the names of the animals, let alone ducks...
This weekend I saw many ducks, the colorful ones, the black with white head, the ones with brown heads and yellow eyes, etc...
Ah ... when will they produce cameras with automatic species-recognition, so the filenames won't be img_xxxx.jpg but mallard_male.jpg or something ;)

Closest I've found: http://pick4.pick.uga.edu/mp/20q?guide=Birds
(Actually I think LazyPhotographer told me about this.)
But you check off certain characteristic (like Yellow Bill) and it narrows the field for you. Way cool.
