Thanks for that - it is good to know. I wonder who they would know if you had been using one though?

Wow, the difference between a real one and a fake one is quite hard to see! :(

This could, in the worst case, not only damage your camera or
camcorder, but also result in a serious accident causing injury, such as burns or loss of
eyesight. In fact, Canon has learnt of an explosion which appears to have been caused by
the use of a counterfeit battery pack.
That's true, you can google for it. The accident they most likely heard about occured in a Nokia mobile phone leading to hot acid being splashed around.
That's a chance of how many millions to one? But still, with US product liability considerations, they have to point that out.
Best regards,
Andy

And I bet, the counterfeiters will do something about that blurred text too..

They're going to have to start putting holograms on the real batteries....

The answer to avoiding these dodgy batteries is simple:
Never buy batteries with the Canon name on them!
As far as I know the dodgy counterfeiters never use names like Power 2000, Lenmar or Sterlingtek. Buy the better name brand BP-511 clones and you can't go wrong.

Makes you wonder how often this happens and if it has happened anywhere else? What about counterfeit CF cards, a nasty no name thing with a SanDisk Extreme label?

Another way MarkH is to only buy from Canon Authorized dealers, if you are mainly interested in getting genuine canon batteries and supplies. Course this cuts out certain online places you may choose to go, or cost more. But on the boxes at least there is the hologram, and can be sure its from canon.

Did we not read on here recently that canon do not manufacture there own batteries.
If this is the case surely someone here may know where they are sourced, could be a company already selling to the open market under different label.
Now unlike the "Counterfeit Canon Copy". I'm sure there are lots of known brands that may be acceptable quallity.
It' s up to the individual if you wish to save money & possibly risk damage & void waranty etc.
Other thoughts...if company " A" were selling you batteries @ £15 each and company "C " were @
£50 each... "C " would be losing sales somewhat, know what i'm saying.
Batteries should always be treated with respect and used as intended. problems can occur with this best of makes.
Don't believe in counterfeiting of any product but do believe in a open competitive market which can keep our photography costs down
Finally thanks Cadwell for info.
