I purchased one off of B&H two months ago, and I absolutely love this flash. Logged back onto B&H to make another order and I was surprised to see that this flash is now discontinued.

Does anyone know of a replacement model to the Sunpak 383 that is in the works, or is already on the market? And if there is a replacement model, does anyone have the specs vs specs comparison between the two.

I'm sad to see that this brilliant and inexpensive flash is no longer available :(

Try Vivitar 285HV's.

I've got two of them and I love 'em. I also wish they would come back on the market. Look around some other sites, you may be able to find one every now and then. I spotted one on Adorama (I think) a month or so ago and should have picked it up.

i'm probably going to sell mine soon. I got a couple of 550's for a wedding. If TTL really helps me, I may reluctantly sell the 383's.

If you decide to sell the 383's please let me know, I'll take them off your hands. Thanks. :D

I'll have a couple to sell later this year, once I upgrade to 580 or 550s. Mine are modified to take SLA batteries and a proper sync port.

If all goes according to plan, I might be selling my two minty ones in a few weeks. I might change my mind and not want to let them go. We'll see. But if anyone wants first dibs should I decide to sell them, PM me.

There is a recent thread on this subject on the Strobist Forum. Seems that Midwest Photo Exchange are preparing to sell a flash specifically designed for Strobist style use. David Hobby indicated he had been testing one. Price, IIRC, under US$100.

Interesting! Will be very interesting to see the specs.

The Vivitar flashes are roughly as powerful and adjustable as the Sunpaks, but don't recharge as quickly with AA batteries. The Sunpaks also have pivoting heads that the Vivitars don't have.

I'll probably be getting rid if my 383 and switch to SB-28s.

Anybody have any other recommendations for a cheap replacement? I want a second flash and I currently have one Sunpak 383 but am not sure if I should get another used 383 or replace my current 383 with something else.
