I would like to understand from the EE user base how you develop your galleries. Do you run an environment on your local PC (like PHPDev for Win) or do you have a 2nd instance of EE loaded on your host?
Being new to the product I am trying to save time and potentially abortive work by making informed decisions.
Thanks

Personally speaking,l I can't see the point of messing around setting it up on a local PC before uploading to my host's server.
With always on ADSL I find it easier to do it on my hosted server then to waste time locally
I currently have a gallery using other software. I've messed around getting the hang of EE on my server and I'm currently uploading photos. Once I'm ready I'll switch to point to the new gallery.

I take it you are a developer or programmer by career since you are asking for a development environment.
I don't use a development envrirnment, but after I had a EE site that I was content with I made sure to do a local backup .
I have since used the backup twice from when i made changes to the PHP code that didn't work.
I guess a second instance of EE for a development envrironment wouldn't be bad now that I know how to set up EE.

If you are using EE as a stand-alone on your site hosting a version locally could let you play a bit :o).
If you are integrating the engine into a site, I find it essential to have a version locally for development purposes.
I develop locally on a PowerBook running OS 10.2.8. Great to be able to tweak locally and then post.
