I thought I saw an annoucement for a new EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Mark II lens. Is there such an upgraded lens? Do you have a URL or any other info on it?

Thanks.

No, there is not a new lens. It is just being sold as a kit option with the 5D Mark II for $3699 initial release. I do not really see Canon putting money into designing a new one since the current model is pretty highly regarded. Now a 24-70 f/2.8L IS....now we're talking.

I would tend to agree. The 24-105 is only about three years old and quite a performer. They could make it an f/2.8, but that would likely make it a fairly massive lens and add at least $600 - 800 to the price. But no, have not heard a word, other than wishful thinking.

There is a new 24/1.4L II, perhaps that is what you saw.

I'd love to have the reach of the 105mm and the 2.8 with IS. This would allow me to ditch the 24-70 and 24-105 for a single lens. (If someone from Canon is reading, DO IT...DO IT!!)

Each lens has it's benefits, which is why I can't seem to get rid of either of them!

Proof that there's always a compromise in any design :). A 24-105 f/2.8 would be expensive and heavy. Some people would accept that and others wouldn't.

Yeah, but it would be nice to have the choice!

Yep - a lot of folks have that same dream ;). But it would be quite a heavy lens as others have indicated. I imagine that 77mm filter thread would grow to at least 82mm (?) like the new 16-35; would hate to have to "retool" my filters.....

Heh! Ever since the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens came out for crop cameras, there has been a real hankering for a full frame equivalent:)!

Just as an aside, I always had a negative view of the Canon kit lenses stemming from the old EF-S 18-55 lens, which has had a bad rep from the beginning, and so when I was contemplating a 5D with the 24-105 kit lens I was wary...but, after hearing some good reports, I took the leap. To this day, the 24-105 is my most-commonly-used lens with my 5D, a great walk-around lens. I have the 24-70 and a couple of good primes within the range of the 24-105, but I use them as specialty lenses because the 24-105 is quite fine as an all-around lens.

For some reason I remember see something about a 24-105 II as the new kit lens too. I can't remember where and I didn't think it made sense so maybe it was a typo.

Cheers,
Josh

They need this lens with f/2.8 and IS Macro. I would probably be very expensive, but it would be a nice multi-purpose lens.

They need to update some of these L's so the current ones can drop in price. ;)
