But I appear to have come back with one of these instead ...

:-)
The interface - holding pairs of buttons - is a bit different from my D30, but I guess I'll adapt.
One problem though is that my Sony PC has a 4-pin iLink connector rather than the 6-pin Firewire. If I get a 4-pin to 6-pin cable, will that work ok with the camera?

Nice. :)
Did the lens come with it?
I have never picked up a 1 series, but they do look like they drive quite differently from other EOS cameras, both digital and film.

Quite the change! You'll appreciate it shooting motorsports, though the 20D is no slouch either.
Yes, a 6-4 FW cable will work fine. newegg.com has them cheap.

Two buttons per operation sounds like it'd be a lot harder and slower to use than the 20D system. How do you, or someone who's had one longer, find it?

Tim: Just like anything else, you adapt. In a short time it's akin to breathing.

Congrats.
It's good to know my best lens looks good on all bodies. Except those dead ones.

Thanks everyone.
I tried a 20D and 1D one after the other, and the 1D just felt right.
Jim - thanks for the cable confirmation.
Pete - I already had the 17-40. But the 300mm F4 IS should be here tomorrow :-) :-)
Tim - hardest part so far has been remembering to keep Select pressed when trying to chimp ;-)
