Interestingly enough, "letter carrier" is a term generally used only by those in the employ of the United States Postal Service. The rest of us just say "mailman" (not PC these days). Mr. Zip would certainly approve.

I did survive, thank you. He's my dog "Patch." He's very playful and we were playing "fetch" with snowballs. That's just his "happy to be free" look.

I note that you're in Indian Wells (no snowballs out there). When I was in the Marine Corps years ago, we used to go out there to Imperial County and Anzo-Borrego State Park and associated BLM land all the time. There was nothing -- and I mean nothing -- out there. Oh to be sure, there were dinosaur fossils and petrified egg nests and all sorts of neat and interesting things all over the place, but no people (this was long before the proliferation of desert meth labs, mind you). I'd probably be horrified to see the encroachment of civilization these days ...

If you haven't been here in the last 10 years, you really wouldn't recognize the place. It's completely developed along hiway 111 all the way from Palms Springs to beyond Indio. The undeveloped land along I-10 is rapidly disappearing.

As long as Patch didn't remove your leg, then it's a very nice photo. Looks can be deceiving...I have a friend who had a Pit Bull, Muggsy. She was probably the sweetest dog I've ever known, although she would occasionally knock me over just for easier licking.

As a UPS driver for several years I had this view many times. Never got bit though....

Bailey is beautiful, am_. They are wonderful dogs and, as bloo said, unfairly maligned. Unfortunately, every urban homeboy and backwoods bubba with an attitude problem feels that raising dogs to be aggressive somehow increases his masculinity, and the results are sometimes tragic. Profit-seeking media types then sensationalize the "dangers" of pitbulls to increase their coffers by driving public "outrage" against the entire breed. As a result, there have been attempts by a number of knee-jerk agitators -- er, activists -- around the country to ban these wonderful animals (the brainless socialists in U.K. have actually been successful in that regard), and that is as stupid and simplistic as the occasional cruel owner who abuses these magnificent dogs. The alternate and proper course of action, in my opinion, is to ban the homies and bubbas, or at least prevent them from breeding. Of course, I'd like to do the same with the hysterical reporters and media pundits (as well as the socialists) who drive the anti-pitbull hysteria. On the other hand, come to think of it, we could ship them all to U.K....

Grrreat photo. As a matter of interest pit bulls from today have to be neutered, and must wear a muzzle in public in New Zealand, so that kind of shot will soon be rare in NZ.

Lucky you. I was a letter carrier many years ago and dog bites were a very common problem. Fortunately, I only suffered one (not a pit bull but a german shepherd mix) ... it wasn't fun. I was quite nervous around dogs for awhile after that. PTSD? ;)

Okay... So what does that really do? If people want a large dog to be Irresponsible with they will have one. Rottie, Dobe, Mastiff, American Bulldog, and so on and so on. Until what? We have no dogs? We are only allowed a dog under so many pounds? So many inches tall? Where does it end? What it comes down to is people are idiots!!!!

When you get a dog like the pit bull into the hands of people who should NOT have them thats what happens. The pit is actually a VERY people oriented dog. I will give you that they can be animal aggressive, but when it comes to people, a well bread pit should not be like that. Originally they were bread for bull baiting, when bull baiting became illegal thats when people started fighting them against one another. Way back when dog fighting was legal and handlers had to go in and grab their dogs from the fight. They didn't want to get bit so if a dog showed human aggression or bit someone they were taken out and shot. They WERE NOT bread. Hence, they took the human aggression out of them over years of breeding. The problem starts when you have people who are not knowledgable about the breed, breeding agressive dogs together. Gameness is a quality of pit bulls. Gameness is the tenacity to fight or defend to the death.... NOT AGGRESSION. But you have bozos who have a poorly bread out of control dog and breed it with another poorly bread out of control dog.
And what do you get another mean poorly bread dog.
You start with a piece of crap, you are going to end with a piece of crap

I was only pointing out the fact of the case in the UK. I wasn't saying if the ban was right or wrong.

On one hand you could use the same argument to ban cars, as irresponsible car drivers kill people.

On the other you could say that there have been no deaths by dogs since the ban was enforced.

I was just making a general statement about breed bans and just quoted yours because you posted about them being banned in the UK & France. I was kind of shocked, I didn't know that.
