Was in NYC today and saw this rather destitute looking fellow sitting on the sidewalk with a sign that read: "Have lost everything - Please Help!" (Pic 1) I walk on by and head up to the Empire State Building to take some pics. On the way back; I see him with what appears to be a better cell phone than mine! (Pic 2) Maybe he just lost all of his minutes...

I hope you didnt "helped" him in anyway.
Perhaps you should send these pics to some local news paper :-)

Cheers :-)

Funny capture.
I read an article in the Toronto Sun (front page actually) about a year ago in which a reporter went "undercover" and spied on an elderly lady who was pan handling in the cities bu$ine$$ district. He surmised that she made $1000/day. And at the end of the day, she was picked up by a large SUV which drove her to her very expensive condo in the suburbs.

Alot of the panhandlers do that for a living, and make a decent living doing it.

Unfortunatley, it's hard to distinquish the difference between those who need it, and those who don't.

I would sell the picture along with a story to a local newspaper. It might just be a snapshot, but the story to go with it could be interesting.

I will usually give a buck or 2 to any of them. If they need it , good. If they don't, then they have another problem.

Couldn't you have a problem publishing a recognizable photo without release or does such public action void their rights?

Thanks Bandit,
All your candid shots over the past few weeks inspired me! I used the 10x zoom on the S1 plus some cropping to get a close up on the cell phone action in the last shot...
Living in the NY area most of my life has jaded me to most that ask for money - they need to be real creative (ie.singing/performing) or have a real novel approach before I will dip into my pocket...

Newspapers can publish photos of faces without fear of invading privacy. The case for defemation would be hard to make. He is a public place, therefore, anyone can photograph him and nothing can be done about. It would be a problem if the image was used in advertising for say... a cell phone company :)

Hehe, I found that the Toronto Sun exposed a couple of women. One was nicknamed the Shaky Lady, and the other, Sticky Lady.

Just see how he is clean shaven apart from his sideburns. I guess his firs real girlfriend dumped him, and can't stand the pain like the most of us?

Nice candid shots!¬

He doesn't look homeless, he is either a punk or a college student doing a research paper on the homeless. Either that, or he is mental.

Nah, I think he's just an idiot punk kid. Hopefully, one day he really will become homeless and find out what it's really like.

Thats normal, I see them all the time in NYC. Some of them wearing DKNY, CK type of expensive jeans and jackets came into the subway begging for spare changes....

What has this world become!! Begger wearing expensive clothing, were middle class people wearing cheap clothing from BigK, and other places....

So sad...
