View Full Version : Canon's lack of 3:2 aspect ratio in compacts

Hi fellow POTN forumers.
I've been looking for a compact camera for my own use, rather than use hand-me-downs from family members. In terms of jpeg quality, Canon still has a good lead in the market (granted its the in-cam sharpening).

However, all canon compacts only offer 4:3 shooting whereas regular 4R printing is 3:2 ratio. I thought the new canons will have this option, but no so.
Panasonic, Sony and Fuji already offer 3:2 shooting for some time, and some at various resolution levels even.

Question is: Does the lack of 3:2 bother you?
I know that Canon has the 3:2 framing on LCD, but its just different from plain shooting 3:2. Most shots from compacts will just go straight to 4R printing without PP or cropping.

Part of my hand me downs include:
Nikon compact 2MP (urg!), Sony P8 3MP, Oly C-5000 and u700.

Not at all. I generally need to crop my DSLR shots for printing; 4:3 and 16:9 display nicely on TVs or digital picture frames. Besides the power zoom isn't sensitive enough to ensure accurate framing, so you'd often need to crop a shot even with "native" 3:2. And all that does is throw away pixels anyhow.

I actually like 4:3 more.

Me too-my Kodak C513 has a 3:2 mode, but I prefer 4:3 on my Canon.
