View Full Version : My 1st Rugby Attempt

Boy oh boy, now this sport is hard to shoot, action all over the place and never know when the ball will change sides, plus, messing around with the 40D's. On top of that, it's almost next to impossible to get a lot of good clean shot, there's always either some part of someone around.
then to make my 1st time worst, the rain clouds kept coming and going and the sun kept coming and going, my exposure, like the game, was all over the place.
I respect those that shoot rugby.
It seems that the metering is different from the 30D  I couldn't get it to go down to ISO 100, it went from ISO 200 to Auto

Looks like you captured some great emotion in the shots. But the sky is a little blown out.

it is, wonderful Sunshine State (my a$$) has very unique rain clouds, the sun is behind me, partially covered by rain clouds ever now and then, while right above me is dark and overcast, and in front of me, clear sky. :(

Great captures for your first attempt, once you get the exposures correct your are well on your way.

the 40D has a custom function called Highlight tone priority, was the ISO in the viewfinder with lowercase 0's (ex. ISO2oo instead of ISO200)?
highlight tone priority is probably why you couldn't get down to iso100.

I'll take a look at that, thanx mizouse
i'm still trying to figure out how to get a proper exposure on weather like that.
I'd tried exposing for the background sky, and the rest of the stuff is underexposed. if I do an exposure for the ground and players, the sky is overexposed.
I did tone the sky down a little in LR

Totally agree with the other comments (great action shots - but work on the exposure). I never thought you boys played the beautiful game of rugby in the USA ?

Love these shots, nice tight crops and great sense of action. 4+6 the sky looks a little overexposed but i think they still work
