is this thing supposed to turn on as soon as you turn the unit on?
or does it turn on after reading a certain temp?
i only noticed now with mine that it doesnt turn on.
i left it on for about 10 mins and did a few pops..a few being at full power
still didnt turn on
i remember using my friends AB800 and i noticed the noisy fan

As far as I remember it starts when you turn it on. Yours is probably defective, call AB they'll fix or replace it - they're renowned for their service.

If you are not going to send it back I would at least find something non-metal to turn the fan with.

Looks like a 40mm DC fan held down by 2 zip ties, used commonly in the personal computer world. If you are crazy like me, I would take the case apart and try to replace the fan myself :)
