Fortunately, they're still doing them, I find them quite enjoyable.
I remember reading a good analysis about how those commercials are actually jabs at apple, but I can't find it.

Macs have become over priced PC's running a beautified (sissified) version of Linux.
If your Mac has an Intel processor inside its not really a Mac, now is it? :p
I've owned and used Macs all the way back to the original, and the II+ and IIe before them.
That said, I am most definitely a PC.

Oh and macs don't crash, programs crash. It doesn't make you restart your computer just because windows media player couldn't play an AVI files. :p
To be honest, whatever you guys say I just laugh. This is fun. :D
That's the smug satisfaction you get knowing that the OS you're on is better.
I used a PC for many years (7-8 years). I can build them myself even (not that hard really). I use to use all the arguments you're making against Mac.
Now I've actually used one for a while and haven't had half the problems losing work etc. from crashes and failures etc. I'm more than happy to say Mac OS is better than Windows.
The comment that they are actually PCs because they have an intel chip is really is true. They are PERSONAL computers. That's right. What they are not is... VISTA! LOL.
Come on, someone say the only reason Macs don't get viruses is that no one uses them, so there is no point writing a virus for it. Then someone else point out there is a virus made for mac.
Never mind that to download it you have to be browsing some obscure porn site, click to download a movie codec (why would you need to do that on a mac?? :p ) Then put your password in (and go through an installation process) to install it. If you're dumb enough to do that, you deserve the 1 or 2 viruses made for a mac. LOL
Nothing personal here guys, this is just fun.
Oh oh, I just remembered. Some PC/linux guy better say something like: "Macs don't have any open source programs." I've heard that one too. lol

VLC is pure awesomeness (comes with almost every codec imaginable).
Is that all you can come up with. LOL
All? I don't need anything more. I like my windows nice and neat and sometimes want two right next to each other. I am forced to do a trial and error thing about 5 times before I get it the right size. And then there's always a little gap which drives me crazy.
I do, however, like a mac's eject [card reader/external] system. Just drag and drop.

Have you ever tried two different windows at the same time?
Take a vista window, and a mac window, and put one on each side of you.
If your feeling really adventerous you can add a Linux window on top...........

Exposé (and Spaces) makes up for it by far. 5 times... dude, have you got a hand-shake problem? :p
I do, however, like a mac's eject [card reader/external] system. Just drag and drop.
Also the install/uninstall (in most cases) just drag an icon into applications (to install), then drag it into trash (to uninstall)

I've got a laptop and a desktop, both 2 gigs of RAM, both dual-core cpu's. They are both running Win XP Pro. I've got a total of $1,200 invested in these two machines and they fit my needs perfectly. If Mac could even come close to that number I might give it a shot.

That's the dock. You can put it on the side.
Yes I have tried a 13 inch macbook. I have to sort of agree with you.
You can upgrade the RAM and HDD on Macs. Not the CPU and the Graphics cards are difficult (you have to buy the right one).
If you love upgrading and playing around, google "hackintosh".

You have one (monitor and keyboard) already.
Try the iMac.
Again, google "hackintosh"
Try matching the specs of your homebuilt one with a DELL. You find macs are not too bad (stable too).
Still can't please everyone. If you're on a budget, PC is better no doubt. You do have to buy windows... or maybe go linux (save more money).
$1200 for two computers you say... let's try this:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=wHF2F2PHCCCX72KDY&nclm=CertifiedMac
No doubt you had to get the "older" technology to get them so cheap. So refurbished macs shouldn't be too much of a compromise. (not flaming, just trying to help) :D

If you love upgrading and playing around, google "hackintosh".
Unfortunately the OS-X user license agreement makes it pretty clear that you can only install it on Apple branded computers. So a legal hackintosh is not possible.
They are not as simple or easy to build as a windows based system either.
Only a limited number of parts are compatible with OS-X, and even then there is no guarantee it will work.

get a sissy, freak, peace lovin, girly geek machine like a Mac.
Alot of the Mac owners missed the original showing because they were busy doing something else
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roFB7bGCAgc
And while all of the Mac are sitting in cafes, while their owners drink their $8 a cup coffee, with their Toyota Prius parked out back, the PC will continue to run the world.
I'm a PC and proud of it. I'd rather stay on a platform where the core focus is personal computing, unlike Apple, who is too busy concentrating on their next iPhone, and only works on the Mac platform in between iPhone releases to keep themselves busy :)

Of course, that was all in jest (just a little banter). When you get into one of these PC vs Mac discussion, logic and reason quickly goes out the door and it just becomes an emotional "My daddy can beat up your daddy" argument.
I'll state it now. I like red meat. I enjoy spending all day Sunday watching football. I drive a gas guzzling truck that eat's Prius's for breakfast. I believe duct tape is the greatest invention.
There is some device you can buy (you plug it into your motherboard some how) that lets you semi-legally install the proper (paid for) Mac OSX. I'm not sure about the legality of that.
Mac market themselves to the trendies, so the uber geeks stay away (and play with linux kernels).
I would never dare call myself trendy, I just like macs more. Nice to have a stable system.
Everyone just keep what they're happy with... I also didn't get an ipod (was anti-ipod, my favourite site was " www.anythingbutipod.com " But with a mac, they work very well, so I got a nano 2. I'll probably get a touch because it's hard to get a PDA to work with a mac without messing around.
I find the mac ads funny. Pretty stupid in a way, but funny. Unless your a pretty insecure PC user, I guess they shouldn't bother you (like I found the new Windows ads... well not funny - I don't think they're meant to be funny - but interesting.

Smug machine... that's just a stereotype. Like all Mac users know nothing about computers and just want an easy to use system. The fact that my 60 y.o. mother can use them has nothing to do with it. :p

Notice that the MAC ads never go on about the things it can do. AKA play games, or you can create videos and photo editing. Oh wait you can do the same things on a MAC that you can do on a PC.

The only thing I could agree with you on is their mouses (the form before function thing). Other than that, they work very well and look good too.
Even the new mighty mouse has some good points (right click and left click are there, and the scrollwheel works well, also you can squeeze the sides to get expose to work) but it's a tad uncomfortable to use.

The iMac is pure compromise.

Want to Calibrate your 24inch monitor? (oh crap, its glossy and the calibration device won't work).
Want to add an expansion card? (oh crap, need a new computer)
Want to upgrade your video card? (oh crap, need a new computer)
Want to add a 2nd hard drive? (oh crap, need a new computer)
Want to use more than 4GB of ram? (oh crap, need a new computer)
They are fantastic consumer device, and in that regard have left every single other PC builder stuck in the stone age.
But they make a lot of design compromises that are ultimately limiting to their functionality.

If you call "function" upgradability, then you're right. If you call "function" a computer that does what you want it to do. Then you're wrong (apart from maybe the calibration thing). :)
If you want to build your computer, get a windows machine. I have no problem with that. The iMac is a great computer. It's an all-in-one computer, not a "build-it-yourself" computer. It doesn't compromise in what it promises for the consumer it targets.
Gateway make them too: http://gadgets.boingboing.net/gimages/gateway_one.jpg
I'd rather have a iMac all-in-one over a gateway all in one. The thing with the iMac is... well OS X. If you're happy with windows, then make your own machine. That's what I use to do. :)

The premise is: "I'm a Mac", "I'm a PC". Maybe a better word is needed here... maybe "theme". It's pretty obvious where windows got the line from. ;)
I think one of the premises of the Mac ads is that you can do what you do on a PC on a Mac. But you can do it (often) faster/better/with more stability etc. And Macs are getting to be more compatible with windows systems.
Here at work, we have a windows server system. I connected to it without doing anything.
Well, anyway. So long as we're all happy. :D
You're totally right though. Windows is a lot easier to get into using. You can just set up a really cheap PC using windows, even cheaper (and more stable) with Linux.

Comparing Windows to Mac OS is like comparing apples and oranges (intended). Windows must be designed to work with countless combinations of third party hardware, using shoddily thrown together device drivers in many cases. Apple knows exactly what motherboard, RAM, cpu, etc will be used with its OS. It's no wonder Apple has historically provided the more stable platform.
I'll be impressed when Apple scraps their proprietary hardware scheme and competes with Microsoft toe-to-toe in the operating system business. Proprietary hardware is so 80's.

The funny thing is that the roles use to be reversed. When the AppleII came out along with the PC came a manual detailing both the hardware and software. Every register, every pin and the user community was encouraged to develop both software and hardware. The PC was the closed box. Mac changed all that. They closed up the box and the PC world opened theirs.

Nope. The Mac vs. PC "war" started for me with the Motorola 68000 microprocessor and the introduction of a incredibly closed architecture. I worked for a company that started the application process to become a hardware developer for Apple Mac peripherals/cards. Once Apple's terms were clear the owner dropped the idea rather quickly. Draconian would be generous and complimentary.
Macs are good at design (look a lot better than DELL for example... ) don't diss them for looking good. That's just... umm... envy?! ;)
Ehh. I guess if you care about how your PC looks. Personally I don't. Its an appliance (like a toaster or microwave), I want the most functionality for the least monetary investment because it will already be obsolete before it ever gets to the house.

I was in the computer industry (primarily retail and distributor sales) for 17 years. When Apple first introduced the iMac and then the Apple retail stores, they had a little less than 5% of the market. Their goal was to double their share. They accomplished that - then they brought in Intel... so the only true difference now is the OS as several other posters have mentioned. But the difference in the OS's are not aimed at power users. And really, photography makes us power needers if not users. Mac provides the "less likely to fail system" while MS provides the standard OS. Unless it has recently changed, Apple does not want to rule the business world... Just Education and general users. We won't see true competition until they are really gearing up for the same audience. And I would hate to see them work from the same level - I like the competition and I hope they both survive. IF Windows or Mac OS were the only tool available, would we still see the efforts to improve and grow the options? Each has pushed the other - and the tools we have now would not be where they are if not for the "aggressive" competition (which actually dates back to before Windows or Apples - watch "Pirates of Silicon Valley" for a fun look at the start). Sorry for the rant, but as a dedicated geek who uses both of the OS's quite regularly (and now works in Education where the battle really rages) I enjoy watching the commercials and the behind the scenes battles...

I know why you switched back to PC. In many cases the mac can have troubles when working with PC. Generally though, I found the mac was able to open and use more files than Windows machines. The problem (for me) is windows machines tend to need extra codecs and programs more to run things that come from my Mac.
For example. Mac video editing is all Quicktime based. Quicktime is actually a very good way to compress a video (in my experience you can get a smaller file with better resolution than the windows WMV). However, a lot of people in windows world cannot work out how to open quicktime files (or they're scared to download quicktime for some reason.
Sure you can get codecs for windows media player, but who wants that hassle. ;)
VLC of course always comes to the rescue. IMHO everyone using Mac or PC needs to download this free program.

When you compare equal hardware there is no price difference between apple and dell.
Links to the two systems?

When you compare equal hardware there is no price difference between apple and dell. Yes, it is certainly a version of UNIX for the masses with little technical knowledge needed for it to "Just Work"
That may be true but you can not buy a dell or a mac with the power my gaming rig or work station has for any where near the cost I built them for.

Probably not, but all of my macs came with little apple bumper stickers. In fact, my mac book had TWO.
