Hi, newbie here. I've just got a new Canon EOS 20d so go easy on me :o

What do you think of these planes that I took on Sunday?

Hi, newbie here. I've just got a new Canon EOS 20d so go easy on me :o

Planes make a great subject. I don't know what lens you used for these or your settings, but I would try to work on your composition a bit. Both the black jet photos (including the linked one) are a bit cluttered with the background, and the fence in front of it is very distracting. Maybe try getting your shot before the plane gets so low, so its not competing with the background. As for the C-130, shots from underneath generally don't work out very good. Don't get frustrated though. You've definitely got the equipment (20D) to take some great shots, just keep practicing. And don't be afraid to crop out unnecessary portions of your pictures.

Aircraft are very difficult to shot unless there low and banking. This is the only good shot i have taken in my life of a plane.This was a demonstration of the flight envelope of a 747 at Farnbrough last year. And this was taken on a Fuji S602! Give it time and the right weather and you will master it. I work next door to Gatwick airport so i have had a bit of experience :-)

To be fair I was driving past Kemble AIrfield on the Glos / Wilts border and parked up just as the plane came into land. Once I get used to the camera I'm sure I'll get better results.

My lens is a Canon EF Zoom Lens - 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

I've just moved up from a Minolta Dimage 5 and this is the best plane pic that I took with that. It was taken at the end of a street a stones throw away from the end of the runway at Heathrow.

I know your new..... 2 Things. Try posting your airplane pics in sports. Thats where they may get looked at more. The second, Your virgin airbus photo is ok. It would be awsome if it was in focus. Keep shooting. Planes believe it or not are hard to shoot. I shoot them every day at Washington Dulles. Some are great and some are trash. Thats the beauty of Digital film.....

I figured that 'Planes' would come under travel to be honest!!!

Focusing on my old camera was a nightmare, but the new 20d that I have is awesome. I plan to go to that spot near Heathrow some time this week so I might be back with some results.
