What is the performace like of this lens like? It's a none IS but is USM and i think starting at F4.
How much is it worth too?

Have a look here (http://www.photographyreview.com/pscLenses/35mm,Zoom/PLS_3128crx.aspx) and here (http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=27). Take a look at this place (http://bhphotovideo.com) for the price new, it's worth whatever fraction of that new price you think is worthwhile. In perfect condition i'd probably shoot for 2/3 the new price, not perfect 1/3 to 2/3, but that's just my opinion, i've never bought a used lens.

FWIW, I have a 100-300...

It's not a bad lens. The action is sometimes a bit loose and you may find it extending when you point the camera down and sliding in whe pointing up. It's reasonably sharp and works great as a macro lens in combination with the 500D Canon close up lens.

I use it on long hikes when I don't want to lug my 100-400 along.

My only real complaint is that the 100-300 quite prone to purple fringing.... Bright points of light.... (ie Sun glinting off water, glass or chrome) produce distinct purple areas.

These are excellent consumer grade lenses! I heartily recommend you grab it if the price is right.

Sure it's a little sharper than allmost all consumer telezoom offerings but it also has the advantage of genuinely quick focus due to it's ring type USM motor.

Oddly i have never seen much purple fringing with this model (i've owned several),that Jim describes.Maybe i'm used to the 75-300 models which REALLY have fringing, lol

KEH sell them for under us$200 for imperfect ones up to about $230 for the like-new examples with box,etc
At these kind of prices they are great buying

Here's a really bad example I dug up.. It's an unsized straight 716x346 crop out of a full sized image.

You can see the purple on the polished gunwales of the boat..... This only appears in very bright sunlight...
