Hello Everyone!

I have both a Canon 30D and a Canon S3.

I can view the raw thumbnails from my 30D on my Vista computer, but I cannot view the raw thumbnails from my S3 (I'm using the hack to get the raw images).

Any ideas as to why I can't?

Thank You!

The "RAW" that CHDK produces isn't an acknowledged standard format, so Vista doesn't know how to read it.

I see that in the "hack" menu, there is a way to change the raw extension from .crw to .cr2

I wonder if that would allow me to view the thumbnails in Vista?

No - the real problem is that the file format is just enough different to be unreadable. It's like you can't rename a .doc file as .jpg and open it in PhotoShop.

Take the card out of the camera and plug it in the computer or a card reader. I have Vista and S5 and inserting the SD card in the computer the RAW CRW file shows up along with the jpg file in the canon directory. It won't show up using the USB cable and the auto device manager.

Thanks bobj1,

I do use a card reader to transfer the photos and both the jpg along with the .crw raw photos are transferred. I cannot see the raw photos though.

Having tried and subsequently dumped Vista, I can't offer anything specific to that OS.

However, having my own S3 with CHDK, I can offer that you'll need to convert the CHDK RAW files into a usable standard before typical image editing software can open them. There are many who extoll the virtues of some free converter for this, but I've found a more elegant solution in the use of RawTherapee (http://www.rawtherapee.com/). This program is easy to use, will open the CHDK RAW files directly, and is completely free. I prefer this over the converter, simply because it never turns out that all of my shots from a set are keepers, and I shoot RAW along with JPG. I then save as a high-quality TIFF if I decide I want to do some processing of it in CS3.

Having used the CHDK hack on my S2is I couldn't read them either until I converted them to a DNG Adobe RAW file. It's been quite awhile since I've used that program so I don't remember the name, but I believe it was a free download. Good Luck.

The CHDK documentation recommends using DNG4PS2 to convert from .crw to .dng file type. It's also a free program - I've used it successfully with a hacked S5IS and PS Elements 6.
