I was at a Wedding last night, not as a shooter but a guest. So had my 40d and 16-35L (and some others) just grabbing snapshots for the family photo album when I ran, literally, into the paid guy. We both went doh sorry dude but then we got to talking.
He said he what lens and camera you got there. I had my 40d and 28-70 mounted. He said I have 40d and 24-70 mounted. Being a bit in shock thinking I saw a 1ds MK2 before he told me he loves the 40 for wedding. He went on to tell me he almost never uses his 1ds mk2 or his 5d. I found this a little odd but he went on to say he likes his lens a bit longer so he out of the way and people relax more.
That really made sense to me, that what I was trying to do too. hahahah
I guess the 40d is not so bad after all. Which by the way I love it.

the only crappy mages i have seen come out of a 40d are usually contibuted to user error. lol..
my friend likes his 40d for weddings as well. and its produces some great images.
and the 16-35l... i die. what a fabulous lens.

maybe he figured a wedding is enough like sportshooting (lots of action, need for reach), so he grabbed the crop.
Next time you see him, let him know I'd happily trade my 30d for either of his FFs (since he barely uses them anymore). :p

Last weekend my assistant/2nd shooter had a 5D, I used it occasionally just because I was shooting into the sun and he had a 24-105L on, which is better with flare than the 17-55 I had on at the time. Other than the 40D having better AF in low light there's not much between the cameras. I think the 5D might have a few more pixels, but that makes little difference.

I think I might be a little confused. Isn't using a crop sensor body the same thing as a a full frame sensor, but the picture is just literally cropped for you? The focal lengths should be the same.. and with the 16.7 Mp of the 1ds mk2 you should have plenty of room to crop while retaining quality(to make it look like a bigger zoom, by cropping to APS-C) . Am I wrong here? I think it would be be better to start off with more data, and crop to your needs.

Pretty much. In crop sensor cameras the light sensors tend to be a little smaller and tighter packed, so you end up with better detail than if you used a full frame and cropped.

I wanted to say "need a backup 40d? I need a 1dsmk2"

40d is perfectly fine for wedding shots. It all depends on the user.

40D ? I'm sure it's fine. I used a 20D as a back-up (and for candid tele) to my 5D at weddings. My partner uses a 40D exclusively.

40D here as well, but after playing with my friends 5D I sure have an itch.

I use 20D and 30D. They work fine for me.

I am still learning about wedding photography but I usually use my 30D w/ a 10D backup. In low-light situations, it can be a little difficult but I try to make the best of it w/ what I got. :) I heard nothing but great things about the FF cameras so looking forward to using one of them when possible.

The 40D is kickass. It's awesome for wedding shooting. The focusing ability is hands down better than the 5D. I shot these two cameras side by side and the 40D really makes the 5D feel slow and old. The crop allows you to stand further back and be less obtrusive, which in many cases I like. 1.6 crop is probably the MOST flexible format out of all of them. You have everything from ultra-wide coverage to telephoto, and you get a real boost in telephoto range due to the crop. The image quality is top notch, and the AF points are spread out very nicely within the viewfinder.
