That first pic is the most amazing airplane shot I've seen around here yet. Extremely cool.

That is simply amazing! What great detail.
Looking at that picture, you can see how cramped the pilots' quarters are.
I wonder how they can fly a supersonic jet and manage all the instruments in such a confined space?

These are awesome shots. I spent some time on airliners going through the rest of your stuff. Just amazing.
This lens appears to be pretty darned good combined with a sharp operator. I can hardly wait......

Well Chris... we're all waiting to hear how you got that shot!?!?! It is certainly an amazing shot, incredibly clear. Did you pan it or were you going the same speed? And if you were also in an aircraft, it couldn't have been easy to whip around a DSLR with a 300 2.8/1.4!?!?!
Inquiring minds want to know!

Apologies for the delay in replying.
Thanks for the kind words. The close up cockpit image was taken from a static elevated location as the aircraft flew past me. A 16x12 now proudly adorns my study wall.
The really amazing part.... Lens and converter are both Sigma EX not Canon L. I cannot justify a Canon 300 2.8 to my other half.
Thanks again.

Great Shot!!!! I would love the see the EXIF info on it if available. BTW, how many shots did you shoot to get it? Did you get multiple chances or was this a one shot do or die photo?

Billsh,
One chance only for this shot. Aircraft was on routine sortie and came past just the once.

Thanks Chris. Thats even more amazing knowing you were shooting at only 640 with 420 focal length and effective focal length of 672. I hope to get a chance to take some shots of the B-1 here at our local base. This will give me some ideas of where to start with my settings.
Thanks again..

Has that lens been discontinued ? Not all sites seem to have it in stock. It looks like a likely replacement for my 100-400L (+ 1.4 TC ofcourse) if Canon don't release a new version at the PMA show at the end of the month.
Great shot Chrisc, 100 sqn are up here quite a lot. I'm at Lossiemouth and they come up to play quite often.
Here's a few shots taken from where I park my car :-)

Hey Chris,
two questions:
1. were the flyby's coordinated/planned or were you just on the platform hoping fo rthe best?
2. How do I get into doing this :) :) you lucky duck!

Awesome stuff!
That's so funny that you never mentioned that the lens was a Canon, and we all just assumed.
I would LOVE to live where you are to be able to get planes flying that low.

Nicely done, Chris.
I have the same combo and love to work with it. Yet, the weight and dimensions of this lens are a backdraw if you have to constantly change lenses and cover some ground on the same time. Although I don't always take the 300 2.8 with me (for the afore-mentioned reasons) I feel I will never part from this nice piece of glass :-)
Also check out Philip Stevens' site http://www.targeta.btinternet.co.uk/ for the low-level action. He published his work in Canon's EOS Magazine.
Edit : Sorry, not 'same' combo - mine's Canon.

Cheers,
Perfect Pixel, in answer to your questions,
1. not planned, just a waiting game, had one chance for that shot.
2. Climb a big hill and wait for a passing plane!
