OK, we need a remote flash setup to do some real estate photography. Looking at the costs of these systems, I'm tempted to just to go buy a 580 and a 430 and skip all the extra wireless triggers, etc. The 580 goes on the camera and the 430 on a stand.

If I do this, can I fire just the 430 if I don't want to use the main flash?

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

One upside to this arrangement would be if we ever got into wedding photography with 2 shooters. We could put the 580 on one camera and the 430 on another.

Yes, the 580 can be a master, trigger the 430 and not actually flash itself...

And the Canon wireless system actually works OK inside most rooms. Lighting adjacent rooms could be an issue though.
