View Full Version : What the Heck is Poutine? . . .

RJSorensen

I understand that I am the new kid on the block, etc., etc. et al. AND all of that, but I have to ask . . . what the heck is Poutine? Why do people want it? Is it to eat and or drink? There is a decalf coffee called Postum . . . perhaps a typo? One could suppose I could PM and ask, but I figure there are 'others' such as I whom would like to know. If it is something bad, Mod's please just delete this thread and or post.

My thanks . . . I guess?

:D Heart stopping (or at least blocking) heaven in a dish:D

French fries covered in gravy and cheese curds!!

Fresh hot fries layered witn cheese curds (at least two layers) and then more curds and lots of gravy on top.

Some have been known to travel many miles to hit fry stands in little towns outside the urban area to get the best:lol:

I would personally escort any out of town POTN user to a local stop when they are in Ottawa:lol:

It's so good if it's from a real resteraunt, a complete no no if it comes from a fast food joint like A&W. They use melted down tires bleeched white instead of cheese.I swear throw it and it will bounce.

I find it very telling that the French, who freely admit to consuming all sorts of disgusting things, don't even have a word for it that translates into Englishh.

It's pronounced Poo-Tin, and was supposedly given that name when somebody got the brilliant idea of putting it in a tin can. It turned out to be too corrosive, and the idea was scrapped. The name stuck, much in the same manner that poutine attaches itself to the walls of your arteries.

The theory is that consuming Poutine allows you to blend in with ANY Canadian habitat. Silly Americans who only eat McDonalds are spotted immediately by the wildlife.

And - if eating Poutine doesn't help you blend in - at least you got to eat Poutine so the day is not a total waste. There's nothing worse than heading out to take some pics and coming back with an empty CF card AND an empty stomach.

Doesn't sound like anything special according to my dictionary:

Noun: scouse
1. A stew of meat and vegetables and hardtack that is eaten by sailors

Scouse? What's that? Is it good?

Is it good!!! Do bears ...in the woods!

Scouse (pronounced to rhyme with house) is made from steak (or mince beef), potato, carrots, onion, oil, water and a few seasoning things. Cooked up into a wonderful stew!

It is local to Liverpool and people from Liverpool are called Scousers!!

HISTORY

Scouse was brought to Liverpool by Northern European sailors, it was originally called Labskause. This was finally shortened to Skause and over time the spelling changed to the more Anglicised version we have today, Scouse.

Sounds like what I know as "beef stew" - any differentiators?

Hardtack is, AFAIK, ridiculously hard dried bread. Able to last without preservatives for quite a long time as long as it's kept dry. Old sailing ships used to carry it as a food substitute. Actually, though, it's probably not half as bad after soaking in a stew for a while.

Hmmm.... I always heard the legend that Poutine comes from the idea of taking a bowl of fries and you *put in* what you want, be it cheese and gravy or meat sauce, etc.

I was in an Ottawa restaraunt for a breakfast meeting yesterday (Summerhayes on Woodroffe Ave) and saw they had Breakfast Poutine on the menu.

No, I did not order it, I already get enough dirty looks from my doctor and his nurse over my poor health habits whenever they see me, but I did ask what it was........home fries smothered in hollandaise (a la eggs Benedict) and covered in cheese.

Death on a plate, before noon.

However, if ordered after 11, at least you can wash it down with a good, cold Canadian brew. Maybe that cuts the cholesterol?

That's a good start but I have always added a bunch of salt to my food..............it kicks up the blood pressure and helps blow out the cholesterol!!!!!!!

Well a quick call around the county today revealed that no one serves Poutine in my area of the US of A. Any Idea where might be the closest place one could sample this heart bomb as a side dish? In fact down at the local diner . . . well none of the regulars and or staff, have ever heard of this. Some of them think I have 'flipped.'

Might be because I wear white coveralls and sit with a white bed sheet over me near the creek for hours on end . . . or because I have this 'new' interest in Little Birds. I showed them the slide action of my new 100-400, and how it feels so good, much like a little 20 gauge Browning over and under skeet model, my wife uses. How it leads and follows the birds so nice. Nope they don't understand none of it. Especially my interest in this here Poutine . . .

It's a trick. If you follow his directions, you'll end up on Victoria Island. The people there don't talk particularly funny, but the women are very pretty.

If you miss Victoria, you'll end up in the Pacific Ocean. The poutine will have a decidedly fishy taste, and will likely be pretty soggy.

So let me see . . . take the right, left and go EAST till they talk funny. Heck that could be the end of town, lol. I got so I liked Ox Tail soup, so I am sure I will love a good dose of Poutine. Thanks for the free offer IanD, should I ever end up in your neck of the woods, I will take you up on your offer + a guided owl shoot.

My kind thanks one and all.

One last question... Is Poutine just an eastern Canada gastronomic delight or can one find this is the western provinces?

You can get it anywhere in Canada. NY Fries sells it.

NY Fries makes a so-so poutine. The best is in the East (Quebec first, Ontario second, N.B and N.S. third ). Sort of like you find the best powder snow in
1) BC
2) Alta
3) QC

I saw the Prince of Wales was going to make an honest women of her . . . finally. Is Poutine from French or English descent? I sometimes get to the UK area of the world.

What area is that - North Atlantic? :)

Hey Ian. I never said it was good. I just said they sell it. No doubt that Quebec has the rights to it. :D But then again Quebecers like Mayo on their fries too. (insert "gag" emoticon here)

Man I missed all the fun.  My usage of Canuck goes back to when I was over in England and the British seem to have some trouble telling the Canadians from Americans. I am not Canadian, or British but Amercan, but sound incredibly Canadian. This makes a lot of sense as were I grew up was only 30 miles from the Canadian border. I also used to watch a lot of stuff on CBC like then Molson HNIC, and Royal Canadian Air Farce and a few other bits. It was actually interesting keeping tabs on what was going on in Canada as it made Air Farce that much more funny. I had just gotten the 10D and wanted to get some ideas and stuff and here we are now, 1,270+ posts later and almost 2 years on.

Has anyone mentioned fries with melted cheddar cheese? That seems to be the big thing in this area (Northeastern USA) at least...or is it just a Pennsylvania thing? At any rate, I won't touch that either although my son swears it's the food for the gods.

I always thought it was the Belgians that like mayonnaise on their fries?

A sidebar; one of the Canadian carry overs from the British is the love of vinegar with french fries. All good fast food places and chip trucks have glass vinegar shaker bottles, most will offer to "vingear and salt half way?" with take out fries to make sure it is evenly distributed.

I was in Las Vegas in the fall and one of our group wanted vinegar for his steak-frites, I will give the server full credit, after a moment of confusion, he was able to produce a small cup of vinegar.

Hm. I thought mayo with fries was a european thing. I love mayo with fries. Way more than ketchup. I actually don't like ketchup. Mayo with burgers (americans seem to hate this) and hotdogs :)

I like a mixture of mayo, mustard and ketchup with my fries. That's about the only way I can eat the things. Otherwise I don't care for fries at all, except for those chili and cheese fries at Tommy's.

Hmmm, Vinagar, mayo, ketchup, all good with fries, but my personal favourtie aioli.

BTW, showed my wife the Poutine description, she had never seem it in her travels around the US, but she said pointed out that even if she did, she would run!

One thing I really like with fries is cocktail sauce. It doesn't really qualify as anything very unique because it's just catchup with attitude.

I will try honest-to-goodness poutine someday before I die-------probably just moments before.

You can get good poutine in Edmonton, too, but I can't remember the name of the place... stopped in at this little place for lunch on our way up to Cold Lake, when I was still living in Calgary, where there isn't really any good poutine.

In Kentucky, you say the word "poutine" and most people think outhouse. I've yet to find anyone here aside from my husband (whom I imported from the afore mentioned Canada) who knows what it is.

For the less adventurous, you can pretty much get gravy with your fries anywhere in Canada and forego the cheese curds, thus having your very own plate of psudo-poutine.

Mmmm. Tommy's. Now THAT is da bomb. It'll kill you slowly but nothing better after midnight. Don't ask don't tell about what's in the big vat. I ahve to move back to LA. NJ doesn't know food. We don't even have an In-N-Out.

Yes on mayo and fries. Oh and sate sauce if you know where to find it can't be beat.

Now just fries and gravy. Thats killer. But you dip your fries never pour the gravy on them. Turns them soggy.
All this talk has gotten me hungry. I think I'll go make a peanut butter and cheese whiz sandwich. :D

Poutine itself is not deadly, it is the unregulated access on a regular basis that is deadly:lol: Too much of a good thing...........

Definitely taxes the self-control:confused:

Not even going to start on the fast-food franchises:evil: .

I named my best outdoor cat Poutine . . . he is a fair sized orange type cat. I figure with those orange and white stripes, they can be the fries and 'stuff' that goes on them. Plus . . . . . NO one 'round here has a cat named Poutine. Of that i am sure.

Perhaps I will share a photo of him sometime, lol.

Program and all extensions are completely current. I guess I just don't have my paranoid settings high enough. I'm not worried, though. Like I said, that's the only time I've ever seen it happen so far.
