Shot w/o flash. MKIIN & Canon 300 2.8.
Going to try flash next game & use the WhiBal card.
Highest ISO was 1600.
Could use some advice on the best crop.

As you mentioned, white balance is an issue.
What kind of shutter speeds were you getting? (EXIF?)

I would expand to 3200 ISO and then use noise reduction in post processing. I say this because I don't think you have enough light simply because the guy's hand is blurred, probably due to shutter speed in the 1/160-1/200 range.

I wouldn't shoot with flash (either on-camera, or slightly below camera) simply because it looks really ugly (in my opinion). It's cooked if they come too close or underxposed if they're too far. Shoot the best you can with available light (imo, again).

My lowest shutter speed was 1/320.
I did apply some NN but obviously not enough on the second photo.

Since you had your "IMAGE EDITING OK" on, I thought I'd take a shot and see if these could be helped with PP ... here's what I came up with:

First shot edited:

First shot edited and cropped:

Second shot edited:

Keep at it - I think you'll like your results with the flash!

Debbie,

I'm curious what pp you did on that 2nd shot. It looks great!

i shoot football as well using really high iso. . . post processing is a must due to the dark stadiums. . . noise ninja works wonders.

The second one was a little tricky. I ran it through Noiseware first. Then I did a color balance by adding a little blue and a little red. Then I kicked up the contrast a little and then I desaturated quite a lot. That's what I came up with!

IODebbie,
Thanks for the tips.
I was playing with tint and temperature but that obviously didn't get it done.
The crop at the waist also works for me.

I am new to pp and have elements 6 . DO you have to get a different program for noise and if so what seems to work the best. thanks

I bought Noise Ninja right before PP the above images. It is very popular.

You don't HAVE TO buy a different program since Photoshop has its own noise reduction filters.

If you shoot at an expanded ISO like 3200, 6400, 12800 whatever, then additional plugins/software like Noise Ninja or Noiseware are usually necessary.

Good try! But two things: you over-did the softening / noise reduction, and the white/color balance is off. Use curves!

I did mess with the curves but was tired lol... bit to red I thinks

One things for sure their both leaps above my go of it.
