D60 Noise

Hi

Does anyone have any info on a firmware update to fix the noise on the D60, or it just a fact of life? It is ruining my photos at 800 speed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Noise at 800 ISO is a fact of life.

Fred Miranda has a custom action for Photoshop that does a good job of removing noise at higher ISO settings.

I agree - 800 speed with any camera will produce noise. The D60’s CMOS sensor is one of best of breed digital imaging engines – so far. Like computers, expect digital cameras to follow MOORE’S LAW – that is – expect the capability in digital cameras to double about every 18 months. Back to noise - my own tests demonstrate 800 speed on the D60 is roughly equivalent to 400 speed with film. Yes it will contain noise artifacts. The best solution for low light situations is the same as any camera – film or digital – use a faster lens. Images with my D60 and a 50mm 1.4 prime at 400 (or less) are simply outstanding. My other two favorite lenses are the 28-70 L 2.8 (this one stays on the camera) and the 70-200 L 2.8. I just purchased the 100-400 L 4.5-5.6 IS, but haven’t had much time to experiment.

If you want noise try a Oly E10 at ISO 320. Compared to the D30 or D60, the E10/E20 cameras have a lot more noise.

I have found several noise reduction actions for PS and have been pleased with most of the results.

With it i get wonderful iso400 images, long exposure, and even for iso800 i was able to create "nearly" noisefree images. I am absolutely amazed by that tool. It is slow but worth it. Get the proversion.
