edit: sorry..title was supposed to say " modifying AlienBees 3rd party speedring? "

i bought a 47" octobox from konova on ebay and had them send me a speedring for an AB

heres what the speedring looks like (photo taken from fredmiranda's site)

and heres what i did

i basically flipped the outter ring part around so the whole ring sits more inward (if that makes sense)
i was thinking the original design would block a good amount of light from the bulb since the outter ring sat more outward

did i gain anything from this?

also, im not quite happy about the center reflective peice that connects to the outter ring
because of its curved shape....more light is directed towards the middle of the octobox

im thinking of scuffing it up a bit or painting it flat white
what do you think?

I see a 'slip lock collar' on the end of the konova speedring. If it works like the Amvona ring that I have, it's supposed to be remove first then I would swing and tilt the rod, to release the tension on the rod, helps to setup the speedring easier. If I reverse the outer ring, that feature will not work. Other than that, I don't see a problem with the reverse ring.

Since most of the flash tube is exposed to the inside of the octobox, I doubt that scuffing up the inner ring will change much. However, if it's painted white, the lighting coming off the box will be warming.
