Ok
Seems like a stupid question but here goes
Im largely self taught as a photographer, picking up a things from books and other photographers. I really dont understand what the custom functions are for and when you would use them.
Any help on this would be great

The camera and the flashes have custom functions to "customize" the way the operate. An example is on my 30d I have Custom Function #4 set to 1 (CF 4-1) putting focus on the splat ( * ) or back button instead of the shutter button. Doing this I focus by pressing the * button with my thumb, which is much more convenient for me. On Canon cameras this also will lock the focus until you either press it again or press the shutter button, with out keeping it pressed. CF 13 is also handy to use on occasion, setting it to 1 will allow you to use the joy stick button to change AF points.

Learning to ask the "correct" question is a sign of superior intellect.
