Just two more DF pics that I took with the 24-105 before I put the macro on. Again, I was pretty pleased with the clarity of these for this lense.

Pics are cropped of course, but I thought the colour and detail was rather nice.

Hi Mark - oooh, thanks so much for your very kind comment :D

This was a classic friendly little darter sitting on a wooden bridge on Sunday, he stayed quite a while as we watched him and I photographed him - a real sweetie :D

Lovely shots Linda - think I would have left them a bit more room in the crop ? but certainly show good detail.

Great photos Linda.

I have loads of darter photos to process - was at Thursley a couple of days last week (and also in Bushy Park at the w/e) but busy at work so havent had the chance to download them onto the computer never mind sort thru them.

Also have been told of a couple of new sites (to me) - shame it is so late in the dragon season as I am struggling to get time to visit them at the moment.

Hi Brian - thanks very much :D Yes, was very pleased with how these came out, really pleased with this lense so far, I just need to get some practice in now with some wider angle shots of things.

Hi Linda, Still a lot of Black Darters around alongside the Common's. Both species were see oviposting. There may be also some Ruddy Darters as well but I will have to look at my photos and books to see if they were actually Ruddy or Common. There were still some of the hawkers around, as well as a Golden-ringed that I managed a couple of photos of.

Chobham Common is one of the sites, a site that is mentioned in the Dragonflies Of Surrey book, but I have always stuck to the sites I know. Apparently the site is nearly as good as Thursley and well worth a visit.

The other site is Shepperton Ponds which I have never come across before. Handy for me as I work 10 minutes away in Walton-on-Thames. Would have been good to get down there at lunch today given the weather we are currently having, but work gets in the way.

Oh thanks for that Stephen - wow, Golden Ringed ay, where abouts did you see and photograph them - any particular area on the pond or bog area? I have never seen one!

Re Chobham Common, yes thats one I keep meaning to check out but havent got round to it and its not that far from me, so looks like its worth a visit before the end of the season.

Thanks again for that info :D

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Still very busy at work.

Golden-ringed I photographed alongside the sandy bridle path that runs north/south between The Moat and the start of the boardwalks. I have seen golden-ringed here before (one flew round me a few times back in July) but wasnt expecting to see one this late in the year. If you walk south from the main boardwalk (the one with the map) about 30 yards, the trees on the left start thinning out, and there is an area of heather, that if you walk slightly further south you can get round into. There is a tract of the heather that has been cut away (for what reason I am not sure), and if you head down it the dragon was roosting on one of the trees. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for that Stephen - I think I understand where you mean as there are just the two sandy paths that we walk down although its the one to the left of the boardwalks we usually walk down as we come back towards the car park, where the heather is on one side and trees on the other. I will keep an eye out over that area in future then, although its probably too late now.

Well done Linda 8-)

Why did you think the images were good for the 24-105? I have that lens and eve though I don't carry it full time I wouldn't part with it -very sharp and excellent color and contrast. At the minimum focus distance I think it's soft, but it's one of the few lenses in its focal range that will give you 1/4 life size...

Hi John

Well as the lense is fairly new to me I really wasnt sure how well it would get any insect shots. I didnt doubt its sharpness and colour reproduction because from the little use I have had with it so far its been superb. It was an unknown quantity to me on how much detail I would get especially with dragonflies and how close I could actually get, hence my surprise.
