Hey folks, I know I really need to work on my PP skills... (or lack thereof) so... hit me. :)
I'll start with a few from a week or so ago. whenever I am subbing out I usually grab the camera (40D + 70-200 2.8 ) I am still working on getting that crucial moment... I hit a few now and then.
tell me honest how bad are they?
Edit: added exif data. All were shot at ISO 100.

I think you'd have had better light if you'd shot from the other side of the field. You're shooting up sun here...

Number three.....taco disc!
Yeah agreed, shoot the other way.
And what's your data looking like? At 2.8 in the sunshine there is no way you should be getting movement like in the feet of the first one. I would say shutter speed was probably your biggest problem other than shooting the wrong way.
Here some with the same set up except a 20D

So you can squeeze out quite a bit more sharpness.

Yes! I love it when people post their ultimate shots.
It looks like it isn't really a high level game. At the more elite level, there'll be more layouts and skys you can capture. If I'm shooting women's ultimate or a particularly windy tournament where the defense plays zone a lot, I like to practice taking shots of people throwing and their mark. You can get some pretty funny facial expressions.

I had a play on this one. I guess I feel the WB is way off on these. You probably shot in full sun hovering around noon. With the combo you had, I would expect a bit better on the focus. I was unable to see the exif data on these to see your shot settings.
I would also try and shoot from a lower point. Looks like you were standing up from the shots shown. Some tighter cropping would also help some of these.
Anyways, post some of your exif data. And lets see the wedding pictures.

good point. since I have mostly just picked up the camera in the middle of the game while subbing out for someone, I just shot from home side, and wasn't thinking so much of the sun.. oops. I'll try and have a go from the other side next time.

Thanks for the link those look great.
these are at F4-F5.6, with a shutter spead of 400-600, except number 3 'taco disc lol. which was at 1/1250. picasa strips the EXIF, I think, sorry about that. Yeah I expected to get a bit more sharpness on these :( do I need to be aiming at a SS of over 1/1000 ? I was thinking that stopping the lens down a bit would improve the sharpness :( I guess I have quite a lot to learn yet :)

I love to play and get my camera out when I can :) yes this is definitely not a high level game, just a local pickup game that we play for fun! there are some very skilled players... and many unskilled players but we all try and have fun :)

thanks, you are right I messed with the wb.. maybe too much  trying to warm them up a bit... I didn't like how they were so changed 'em :) yes I was standing for all of these I think, I'll have to try getting lower, but I am not sure about jumping up and running back and forth LOL I use all my energy in the game then don't have so much to try to shoot LOL.
tighter cropping? I thought I had cropped them tighter lol. you suggesting cutting limbs to get really up in the action?
again sorry about the EXIF. I'll try and edit my first post with it in a min.

I am SO down for a POTN ultimate game, haha. I'm giving up playing for ski team....it's kinda sad.
For a setting like that where your angle with the sun is changing, set it on Av @ 2.8, then adjust your ISO to get somewhere between 1/1250-1/4000. The 2.8 will isolate your subject better and pop the subject. Depending on the direction of the lighting you might have to change your exposure compensation, take a couple test shots, and then look at the exposure on the faces. If it's overcast and going to be steady, go ahead take some test exposures and shoot manual.
I really wanna play now, haha.

sad to hear you are going into skiing instead of Ultimate :(
Thanks for the advice! (I just lost my reply cause of Maintenance grrr, lets see if I can remember what I said :| )
Next time (prolly sunday) I'll try several things a little different: 1. shoot from the other side of the field, with the sun, not 'into' it. 2. try to crop tighter. 3. shoot wide open f2.8 for better OOF BG (which is more cluttered from that side of the field) 4. bump my ISO so I can keep the SS above 1000th of a sec. 5. dont mess with the WB so much (as per Fury :) )
oh and I guess I achieved my goal with the pics :D there are a lot of folks that I know that don't want to play ultimate 'cause it's boring throwing a frisbee' LOL, I'll show them! :D

So Zadok are you the kid that gets picked last? You the bench warmer? Why do you get to just take pictures?

Yup sounds about right. What focus mode were you using?

Yup picked last when they start pairing from the inexperienced players** :) LOL. unfortunately for my photography, they don't like me to not play (don't miss the double negative) :( but I guess that is alright cause I need the exercise too!
one day several months ago, I specifically went without my game bag only my camera, and shot the game, I was working on breaking in my 70-200 (there were ducks nearby too!), the folks playing were not too happy that I wasn't going to play that day LOL!

AI Servo (or is it AL servo?) whatever code they use for continuous. on center af point.
Edit: ** our general procedure is to pair similarly experienced players and have them split one going to each of the teams. this way the teams are pretty well balanced as far as skill levels... it makes for a more fun game that way :)
