I rented the 70-200 f.4 IS a few weekends ago, and was lucky enough to get a break in the weather to attend this event and snap some pics. There was a heavy overcast for most of the day, but I think the pictures still managed to come out OK. This was my first time shooting anything moving that fast! (and first time seeing a formula 1 car in action) - a lot of fun! This was a Mazda sponsored event, called Mazda FormulaX, held at New Jersey Motorsports Parkway.

Please critique these images, and edit where you see fit....its the only way to learn! Thanks

Those are Star Mazdas, not formula 1 :)

Van Diemens are a far cry from F1s in terms of construction lol.

All kiddin aside, the pictures aren't bad for a first event. The panning while not TACK sharp isn't shabby judging from the slowish shutter speed in 3. 6 isn't as "on" as 3. The "frozen" shots still have wheel blur in them, so I'd say you're off to a good start :)

Thanks for the comments!

I was kinda thinking the same thing. From what I imagined, Formula 1 cars were much wider and bulkier than these cars. Based of the tire size alone, I figured these weren't true formula 1 cars. I asked one of the guys running the event, and he assured me time and time again these were true F1 cars, lol...

Good start. I can't see the EXIF, so I can't offer much C&C. You might try bumping the contrast to help get rid of the haze.

Belive me, they're not F1 cars  An F1 car would be maybe 25-30 seconds per lap quicker than a Star Mazda, depending on circuit length of course. They look pretty good for a first attempt. As someone has said, a few aren't pin sharp, but that's down to the very low shutter speeds. The only way you get better is with practice.

I almost went there for the vintage race/air show.. How was the park as far as shoot spots for someone without a pass?
