View Full Version : Am I Crazy to Sell my SD1000 for Fuji S7000?

I really love my SD1000 - it's very small, fast, sharp and produces consistently-good images. However, I've recently been wanting some more manual control.

Would I be crazy to sell my SD1000 and buy a used Fujifilm S7000? I could get the Fuji for $150-180 on eBay in mint condition.

Review here:

It has some nice perks, full manual control, MF-by-wire ring, 6x zoom, dual AF, 235k pixel EVF, hotshoe, etc. and I have a 512MB CF card I can use in it. I recently owned an S5100 that I sold to buy my nifty fifty. I loved that camera and I've heard the S7000 is even better.

ISO 800 (max ISO) is pixel binned to 3MP, although it looks very clean. ISO 400 is also leaps and bounds cleaner than my SD1000.

I'll lose some portability, but gain some control. Any thoughts on this?

I'm sorry, I don't have much advice to offer on your choice... but I'm really curious why you'd want a camera that size, given that you've got some EOS gear already.

I totally understand keeping a P&S in your pocket, but once you go to that size, wouldn't you just rather pull out your 10D?

I mst say, that while I was attracted by the raw capability and the els type, I have to say that even ISO200 is quite noise in empty areas, like sky and walls.

I'd rather take the shot with ISO80 a little dark and lighten it up in post and run a slight noise reduce at 10 megapixel on my A640 than use a 7000 in raw at ISO200 6 megapixel. I know the megapixels aren't really THAT important, but consider that even after size reduction for the samples page, they still show a marked amount of noise, well, to me anyway. I wouldn't have one over my 640, but that's personal choice. Sizewize, im with milorad, you may as well use the 10D; same hassle but far superior image.

I suppose you guys are right. That was one concern I had about the S7000, ISO 200 being the minimum. It's also nowhere near pocketable like my SD1000.

Perhaps I should at least look into a used PowerShot G5. My budget is under $200.

I wouldn't get rid of my SD750 for nothing (P&S wise) except SD870 IS. :D

Now get it as another camera, sure. Unfortunately the reason I'd get it or that I don't do as often, concerts. They never allow Pro cameras and the compact series don't have enough zoom sometimes if you're not in some House of Blues type joint but a bigger stadium in which 15x+ zoom is needed. So now these cameras hold no interest for me anymore.

Here are some I'm considering:

Nikon Coolpix 8400 (compact, rugged magnesium body, 24-85mm lens!)
Fujifilm FinePix S7000 (long zoom, trademark Fujifilm color)
PowerShot G5 (fast lens, compact, but noisy high ISO)
Olympus C-5060 (very fast lens, compact, durable)

I might have some money to play around with. I just bought a 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 USM (original metal mount) to replace my 28-105 II USM as my Elan IIE walkaround. I got a great deal on the 28-80mm ($60) and I figure I can get at least $160 for my 28-105 II USM. That's $100 or so profit.

What about the Olympus SP570 ? 20x optical zoom on it.

I want something old and cheap. Many of these "prosumer" bodies from '03-'06 have some high-end optics and a durable metal body not found on newer prosumer superzooms and the like.

Now if I could find an Olympus C-8080... :D

How much zoom was on the Pro 1? Someone is selling one in the classifieds area. Fuji has some nice cameras though, I always found using them annoying though.

The Pro1 has a 7x L Series zoom and 8 megapixels. Certainly a contender.
