View Full Version : Dagnammit!! I'll need more gear (For Soccer)

So, I've been merrily plodding along with my 30D (+300 /f2.8 ) and 350D (+70-200 f/2.8 ) until I decide to get the 1D mkII. Shots with the 30D were good, nice focal length, not too much need to crop.

Now i've got the 1D mkII I need to crop more...what vital factor did I forget!? 1.6 and 1.3 crop factors!!!

So now I'm looking at either the 400L f/2.8IS or a 1.4x TC. So, does anyone use the 300 + 1.4TC combo for nighttime sports?! If so, what do you think? Is the f/4.0 noticeably different from f/2.8?

I was doing "soccer" last night and was getting 1/1250 @ f/2.8 and ISO 1600, anyone have any idea what i'd be looking at if had the TC on?

Any help/calculations appreciated.

James.

PS. I would show pictures, but it's football league stuff, so i'm limited to what I can show.

You lose one stop with the 1.4x tele. So, for your same exposure, you would either need to bump to ISO 3200 or 1/625 (or whatever one stop slower on shutter would be.... I am not awake yet).

One stop would be 1/1000, so I can even drop the ISO a bit too and lose some of the noise at 1600. Even ISO1250 or ISO1000 would cut out a lot of that.

To be honest, I don't really want to drop the exposure slower than 1/800 though, so I reckon potential settings will be 1/800 @ f/4.0 w. ISO1250 and the TC on.

Although, by dropping the ISO speed to perhaps ISO1000 without the TC, the noise will be low enough to be able to crop more effectively, whilst keeping the bokeh with f/2.8.

Hmmmmm...if only I had a chance to try it out without it being an important game.

James.

Shutter speed would be 1/640 at f4 ISO 1600.

An easy way to determine the same exposure is to count clicks on your camera dial. For every click of aperture, dial a click of shutter speed in the opposite direction. For example, three clicks are needed to get from 2.8 to 4.0 (3.2,3.5,4.0). So to get the same exposure, you need to slow down the shutter speed three clicks (1/1000, 1/800/ 1/640).

I have the MKII + 300 2.8 IS + 1.4 TC as well and shoot mainly sports. However, I've never shot a night game at a venue that has good enough lights to put on the tele. But I image the AF would be a bit slower and with the slower shutter speed, motion blur would come into play at peak action.

1/1000? I am still waking up. lol.

Of course...I forgot that i'm going down 1/3 stop each turn of the dial, so yeah, 1/640 would be the result.

Hmm...I reckon a slight tweaking of the shutter speeds and ISO with the 300 alone should suffice...especially as I only just spent £750 on the 1D mkII

I've attached an example shot...RonnieA the venue (if you know the UK) was the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, it's a football league ground so has to have lighting to a certain level...

EXIF was:
Camera Model: Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Focal Length: 300mm
Lens Aperture: F/2.8
Exposure Time: 1/1250
ISO Speed: ISO-1600
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Comp: 0 step

1/640s is a common 'floor' speed for field sports. Just whack on the TC and shoot this speed at f/4 and see what you think. Should be fine. I sometimes do the same thing on my 400/2.8 IS when I don't have the 600 with me, the 300/2.8 IS takes the TC just as well.

WOW! What a choice - 400L f/2.8IS or a 1.4x TC.

There is something wrong with this picture.

The frightening realisation that you have a problem, an addiction if you will.

First off, you don't need IS for soccer so you can drop down a notch. I have the Mark II version of the 400 2.8 which is the one just before IS. Its about $1500-2000 less than the IS version if you can find it. I tend to use the TC1.4 on the 400 over half the time, so I would highly suggest getting both if your budget allows.

Problem is, i'm not just doing soccer, I would prefer to have the IS on the lens and the extra options it gives. I think it'll be a part/ex job with the 300 to the 400. Though, if I do decide to sell up, look out for a good condition 300L f/2.8 IS on here!!

This is a real problem. I know it well.
