View Full Version : off camera flash not enough to stop redeye?

I used a bracket that had my flash about 2 feet away from my lens while shooting a highschool football game. Sometimes I still got redeye even when the player was only 30 yards away from me.
Is there anything else I can do? What about the angle of the flash?
Thanks,
Mike

At that distance I don't think so...

Other than set up flashes on stands at various locations ( ala sports Illustrated), no.
The angle between the flash and lens at that distance is still way too small to remove redeye.
I think you will just have to get used to processing it out of your shots.

This is very typical of football with flash. The problem is that when the subject is further away the more chance of redeye since the angle of flash to subject and back to lens becomes narrower the further the subject is away.
Think of a subject six feet in front of you and you have your camera with a flash two feet off your camera/lens location. If you were to draw a line from the flash to the subject's eye and then back to the lens you would see a specific angle of these two lines at the subjects eye. When this angle is large (relatively) there is less chance of red eye due to the reflection coming back will likely not come into the lens.
Now draw the same lines but with the subject 30 yards away. The angle is much narrower and therefore increases the chances of a reflection coming back to the lens.
