I'll be going to Irwindale, CA for the final event of the Formula D drift series in October.
Will http://www.tamrac.com/5549m_open.jpg be considered tooo big, as I'll be flying southwest airlines. I hope to fit my 40D, Digital Rebel and S5 IS cameras along with the 70-200 Sigma f2.8, 28-75 Tamron and nifty fifty in that bag along w/my laptop...
Hope they don't give me a difficult time with such back pack....
Also, will I be allowed a small hand carry as well as that backpack?

Most airlines allow a "carryon" and what I call "technical" bag.
Have carried on a standard sized bookbag as well as my fastpack 250 with my camera gear & laptop in it.

I just flew a couple of weeks ago and my "carry ons" were a laptop-sized briefcase and a Lowepro Computrekker Plus AW... No issues

I fly Southwest three times a week. I carry on a Think Tank Airport International and a backpack (laptop and other stuff). Sometimes I have a tripod on the side of the Think Tank. No one in the TSA or Southwest has ever questioned it.

That bag will probably be too large for the overhead compartments of turboprops such as the ATR 42, ATR 72, Saab and Fairchild commuter planes, and the smallest regional jets such as the Embraer 135 and 145 and the Canadair CRJ-100 and CRJ-200.
From experience, that bag and larger bags should fit in the overhead compartments of Boeing 717's and 737's, Airbus A319 and A320's, DC-9's and MD-80's, and the newer Embraer E-170 and E-190 series.

I use my Adventure 9 all the time flying all over the US, different airlines, no problems. I even do a roller bag with it. So, it's considered a personal item.

I carried on this monster a couple of years ago:

The problem is the straps make it though to fit in the overhead compartments.

Looks like a Tamrac Adventure 9. I've travelled with it as carry on with no problems.

You bag will absolutely be fine for carry-on with Southwest Airlines and any other mainline North American carrier. Southwest allows for 1 carry on + 1 personal item, and they do not weight the carry-ons.
I fly them often, and have flown them dozens of times with a fully loaded Think Tank Airport Addicted weighing in at over 60lbs.....no problems.
.......and Southwest Airlines has been a client of mine, having photographed a number of projects for them (just a disclaimer).

I frequently travel with a Gitzo 1258 attached to the side of my carry on. The TSA has never said anything about it. There is nothing on the TSA's site regarding tripods. I fly mainly Southwest. They have never said anything about it to me.
Other airlines may take issue, but the TSA will allow it.

Jerome,
Tripods are allowed as carry-on when flying within the United States, and for international travel to and from most countries. Your tripod may be counted as a 'carry-on' item should it cause your bag to exceed the maximum carry-on size allowances set forth by your airline.
Tripods must conform to airline specified carry-on requirements. It is best to remove the head and pack that in your carry on, bringing only the legs through security separately. Having spoken with dozens of photographers about this topic over the last three years, for some reason tripods with the head attached cause more problems from misinformed TSA screeners than those with the head removed.
I fly with my tripod on the exterior of my bag depending on the job, and fly with one or two Manfrotto 3373 compact light stands attached to the exterior of my backpack of a consistent basis. In one trip earlier this year in the span of 3.5 days I passed through security in Providence, Philadelphia, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Incheon, Tokyo and Chicago with a Manfrotto 3373 light stand attached to a North Face Surge backpack and no one blinked twice at any security check point at the airport (they did remove and inspect my Pocket Wizards in Incheon and Chicago though (at least I think those were the two airports that checked them out).
I address the subject of flying with a tripod exterior to my bag at www.flyingwithfish.com if you search "tripod" or "Manfrotto 3373"
Happy Flying
