For college we had to shoot a few portraits. This was my first attempt so please be gentle with me!

I like them very much!

Especially #2. Nice capture.
I also thinks that B&W works wonderful here.

(Of course it also helps to have a beautiful model  )

Best regards,
Andy

Nice lighting on 1 and 3. What kind of lighting did you use for those? Also is that a black backdrop?

Nice work Jon. Particularly like #3. She has a great expression - like she's about to laugh..made me smile..

Keep posting 'em up..!!

Thanks guys,

The lighting was a bit hit and miss to be honest. The college i go to has excellent teachers but i think they are let down by the ageing facilitites.
The lights were basically just one large tungsten lamp with a white umbrella type reflector and a small tungsten lamp on a dodgy stand. the small one was used for fill.

Yes it was a black backdrop. I was trying to create a look whereby the models face was emerging from the blackness. I insisted she wear black to help acheive this.

BTW the model is my sister so keep comments clean!!! :-)

Thanks again guys

Just curious as to which lens you used for these portrait shots?

Very nice BTW!

It was the 17-40 L @F8

To be honest the whole night was a balls up as i was shooting at AV mode (F8) and neglected to bump up the ISO from 100 :-(

Shutter speeds were around 1/6 sec which were just too slow to avoid blur from the models movement. I was gutted, from around 120 shots i had about 8 useable ones.

Lesson learnt.

I like #2 best, the other two do nothing for me, sorry. The first one her eyes are partially closed and I don't like the angle much, the last seems a little ordinary. I hope you take my comments as mildly helpful not insulting :)
