Thanks. That was an interesting concept, David. Appreciate it...and thanks jbrown. Let's hope lots of people post up their setups...I don't think many will be the same.

Very nice setup there... but expensive.
I ordered my 285HV yesterday, now I'm going to get a 28" Westcott softbox, and go from there. :)

i use elinchrom d-lite 4's with a black cotton background hanging from the ceiling. works for me, except i do need a hairlight to add to the mix to remove the subject further from the background.

This was shot with the lights you see in the next picture. Two Photogenics studio monolights (one thru a softbox, the other thru an umbrella) and an unmodified Sunpak 383 speedlight. The speedlight was used to light the gentlemen in the background.

I'm shooting a Canon Rebel Xsi, with kit lens, but I rent when i need specialty lenes, I have a 3 light setup with 2 18x18 studio strobes/softboxs, 1 background light and each strobe contains a 50w modeling light. what's a good rule of thumb when trying to light a model using one of my strobes as a key light. how far away from the model it should be? I really like the rembrant techinque.

Yes, the Sigma was off camera .
Below th lighting setup on a cloudy day. But we wanted a sunny beach shot =)
So we used two off camera strobes here.

Wow, that is a nice shot for 2 speedlites. Did you have the bare one set at a really wide angle? It looks like it's pointed very high...

The image of me and the model is taken some minutes apart from the shot I retouched, and we moved the lights a little, here and there. The bara Vivitar285 is in a nother position in the retouched image, and provides a little "sunlight".

I haven't posted on this forum in ages!
Here's one. As simple as it gets. One softbox camera right, up and angled down.

Sam, is the light in the second shot of your setup a QL-1000? If so, how do you like it?
I just bought 4 of them with stands and soft boxes for my students at school to use in our video classes. They are constant lighting so I can't really use them for the photography classes, unless we use them as a plain light source etc.

Petra in the leaves was shot with a Sigma 10-20 at 10mm I think. Quite extreme angle but works ok here as she is so centered.
I used f12 or 14 as I wanted the sun streaks to show, and I also used a Vivitar Flash with a shoot thru umbrella for fill.
Normally I would use my cheap but sharp and good Canon 50mm 1.8, but here I had to get rather close as the Flash is not that powerful.

2 Alien Bees B1600, 1 Alien Bees B800, Photek umbrellas, Honeycomb grid and gels.
This was shot with just 1 B1600 and a 60" Photek umbrella.

Right now I have 3 Calumet Travelight 750's and a cheapo Photogenics Studiomax III. I have several softboxes of varied size and different types of umbrellas and then a snoot, grid, barndoors..ect.
So far I have been very pleased with the 750's!
Next on the list is to fulfill my craving for a nice ringlight.

I have a Photoflex Starflash setup - two 650's w/ softbox and a 300 w/ umbrella. I just added a snoot last week. I have a couple reflectors but a stand and holder would help. I've owned the lights about a year now and I'm just learning their capabilities, rather, my capabilities. I was under the impression that they would be too bright for less than f/4 but I've discovered it's able to handle f/2. I also just added a 50mm f/1.4 and have tried a few at f/1.4 using the 250w model bulb and find there is plenty of light. For portraiture I am trying to master the basics - narrow, broad, rembrandt, butterfly, etc. It adds some contrast I wasn't getting when I shot w/ two lights at same setting and a third on backdrop. I plan to add a 4th light for backdrop balance. It seems the more I learn of photography the more I find out how little I know. Buddha is the only one in the house that sits patiently while I adjust lights. The 5d review screen is not the best. I now use the canon utility remote shooting for help in figuring what to correct. This shot was my attempt at butterfly. It is a challenge as basement ceilings are low, maybe 6'8". Two 650's in front, gold reflector held below the head and a 300 w/ snoot aimed at backdrop to create the halo.

Two things to remember when posting here in this thread:
1. The idea is to post a lighting set-up, not just the resulting image. To that end, you need to show the lights and how they were set up to illuminate the subject or include a diagram that shows the setup.
2. Any images used as examples that show any degree of nudity should be provided as links and not attachments or embedded files. Talk About G&N posts should follow the guidelines in the stickies at the top of the forum.

This friday I'll be able to post a model with lighting setup, for now it's buddha. The lighting used for this was just a softbox to left of object, reflector to right. The snoot in the front wasn't used in the shot I selected for stock. The lens is still on tripod and buddha is turned to his right or towards the light. He has a finger broken off that will be added back in PS. Only processed raw via acr. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3340/3176356966_75883f27c3.jpg The results w/ 85 f/1.8 @ f/2.8 -
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3300/3175524249_f4396b8ecf.jpg also w/ 70-200 @ 200mm f/6.3 - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3306/3175523447_e998255cdc.jpg
I recently added a older puter & monitor in studio for remote shooting. It's nice to see on monitor the lighting effects when making adjustments and seeing if focused correctly. It would be nice if zoombrowser would show blown highlighs like acr or 5d.

I noticed this thread had died and hoped if I put it back to the top it might get more responses. Being new to portrait/glamour, I was hoping to get feedback from the more expereienced as to the type of staging and setups they were using.

Ok, I will throw a setup shot in to help keep this thread alive.
These were done in my "living room" studio.
They are quite self explaining, however any Q's dont hessitate to ask.
(PS lots of "extra" feathers were cloned into the image to keep you Mod's happy :)
PPS, shot details, apature etx on the set up image, were the same for the result image.
Cheers, Mark

Thanks for the input Manish!
oh, whats a magical crystal ball ?
The "magical crystal" is a 'paper weight thingy' that I use on every studio shoot. Craig, my lighting assistant, pictured back to camera - (he's a Dentist so I cant show you his face,) lol, manages to trip over it every shoot - no matter where i put it!
I tell the model's to watch for this to happen, it really is quite a laugh, Craig can squeeze around lights, leads, etc, but the magical crystal always get's him!
It's another "ice breaker" that adds fun to the shoots...

Nice! These are the kind of things I was hoping to see. I too shoot in my livingroom, although its fairly large and space isn't really an issue, layout and setup is key. Thanks for sharing, and with so much detail as well.
Hope to see more along these lines!

Here is another result and setup shot I took while experimenting "strobist" style.
I have a few portrait sessions coming up, and wanted to try something a little different.
Ok, I KNOW the models a "dummy" - and your not allowed to coment on her looks etc, LOL!
- but shes great to practice lighting techniques on, as she doesnt move, complain or become 'fatally' bored like my partner...
The idea behind this shot was to shoot a "snooted" strobe through a palm frond to cast a cool shadow effect on the wall behind....ummm,, lets call her Barbie!, lol
The tricky thing was to be able to light Barbies face, without any "spill light" wiping out the cool shadow behind her.
Answer...make a cardboard grid spot to fit over the 580ex strobe lighting Barbie.
Grids cut down light spill, and allow you really good directional control of light.
Thank you to "Strobist" David Hoby

I know the result isnt perfect, and Barbies hair needs some help!,..but its the concept I wanted to share, and how easy this is to do with just a 2 light setup.
Cheers,
Mark
