It sure is tough getting good shots at night with a 70-200 F4 and 430EX flash
but it's so fun!! :D
We ended up winning 25-7 making us 2-0 for the season.
anyway, let me know what you think! All CC welcome as always.

Ok Since you asked...first, I guess I am not a big fan of night flash football shots. I realize that with most lights there is really no other choice and that there are some good shots to be had with the right equipment, but I don't think you have that here with an f4 lens, even with the flash.
Photo 1
I assume these are the team captains but it appears out of context. It looks like they are walking on to field for coin flip (do they do that in HS ball) but they are walking in wrong direction. Thus it is not clear why they are holding hands in this photo. Also, maybe this shot from the front would be better?
Photo 2
Flash on white shirt player in foreground is too distracting and player with ball, his eyes look too OOF. You could maybe crop in tighter and isolate player with ball.
Photo 3
Nice color in sky but this for me would be deleted in camera. It appears that your flash did not fire and it really has no impact at all. Just a bunch of players standing in the dark
Photo 4
Too far away...crop tighter. Can't really tell what focus was. It kind of looks OK. Would be nice to see his eyes if visible.
Photo 5
Looks too soft...motion blur...would have been great action capture otherwise
Photo 6
Another delete for me.Can't see faces. Not clear what they are doing, I assume celebrating a big tackle or touchdown? Main point would be get the faces in the shot.
As to the softness, what effective shutter speed you getting? I would expect better "freezing" of action with flash but am not familiar with what settings should be used in this situation. Perhaps some of the other night football shooters can chime in?
Are you using a monopod? or just hand held. That might help stabilize things a bit too.
Softness may also simply be related to slow AF or a missed AF point, the latter which will get better with more practice.
Cheers!
