Hi all
Anyone know if a 10D will function with a Tamron adaptall lens fitted with an EOS adapter, I know it gives all manual working (focus, exposure and diaphram) but will the camera actualy function without an electronic lens fitted.
Thanks
Paul

Yes ,in a basic semi-automatic kind of way.
Set the camera to Av then set the lens aperture by hand. The camera will then choose a shutter speed to match the amount of light.
Metering is not the full matrix kind but does a pretty good job.
Even the flash works reasonably well.
By the way-the EOS adaptall mount cost an absolute fortune for what they are !!!!!
Instead-buy an M42 adaptall mount then use a EOS-M42 adapter to attach it to the camera. It does exactly the same thing ,is far more versatile and costs maybe 1/8th the price!
Which lens are you wanting to use? Sounds interesting

What I want to check on is if the old Tamron Adaptall 2 MK1 lenses that I have ie 70-150 35-70 are as good as I remember, as negatives that where prodused using these lenses are of a much higer quality than images that I am producing today using Canon consumer grade lenses.
The M42 adapter you mentioned, who makes them as that may be a better option.
Thanks

You might consider this one, as I've searched eBay worldwide for a week and this was the only M42 version that came up ... among dozens of adapters for other mounts.
They seem to be scarce ... guess that's because M42 is the most usable adapter now.
But as I was beaten to the 70-200/3.5 adaptall lens I was bidding for, I might as well share this information
I think all these adapters were actually made by Tamron and cost around 50$ new.
Best regards,
Andy

Hi Paul,
I use an old tamron SP 90mm macro with M42 adaptor and an M42 to EOS adamptor that works very well. As described above, it works with manual focussing/exposure on my 10D with no probs.
the adaptors (like many other filters, hoods etc) are available in GB from SRB filters at

Finding an M42 version would still be better than buying an equaly rare and very expensive eos version:eek:
You know, finding a new one may actually be easier than buying a used one .Tamron doesn't make them anymore but there are still quite a few still in the supply chain. The best shop here locally has several

Hi,
I have a similar "problem", i have a tamron adaptall-2 80-210mm lens that i wanted to use on my 20D. When i went to ask in a local shop if this was possible, they told me it wasn't. I suggested my idea of using two adapters: adaptall2 -> FD and and FD -> EF.
However the salesman disencouraged it and also noted that stacking two adapters would turn the lens into a macro lens.
Is the adaptall2 -> M42 / M42 -> EF sollution any different?
If it works fine, i'll probably use this method.
Are both these adapters made my tamron and still being manufactured btw, or would i have to turn to ebay?
All info is greatly appreciated :)

The Adaptall-FD + FD-EF combination won't work except with a cheap adapter that won't let you focus to infinity, a cheap adapter which gives a slight teleconverter effect and a really poor image, or an expensive 1.26x Canon adapter which gives pretty good quality. This is because the Canon FD body is thinner than an EOS body, so there's more lens barrel for the same optics. The Pentax/Praktica (M42) threaded adapter will work because the Pentax bodies are thicker than the EOS body, so there's some room for an adapter. The Adaptall adapter would have to be from Tamron, and some may still be in the stores; a number of companies have made M42 - EOS adapters and you can probably find a real store to buy them from.

Thanks for the info, that was exactly what i needed to know :D
I'm planning on buying the two M42 adapters, but can anyone tell me if it will work on my 20D? A friend of mine tried an older sigma lens on his 300D and it gave him an error 99. Is there a way of knowing if the 20D will accept my lens?

The older Sigma lens was an EF lens with incompatible electronic protocol to the new camera.
A M42-EOS adapter is basically a machined metal part with no electronic contacts whatsoever. The camera does not know what kind of lens is fitted, as there is no communication. You have to set the aperture manual (on the lens), the camera exposes for the correct shutter time.
My first M42 lens arrived today ... Tomorrow evening I'll be able to tell you from experience whether it worked, today you'll have to take my hope for it.
