I was hoping to find a remote to activate the shutter on this camera, it can be wired or wireless. I may be out of luck though.
Does anyone here know for sure?

The feature you were looking for is called remote shooting (camera controlled by tether using the USB cable to a PC). Most of the older versions of the Canon Powershots had it, as does the G9. You would have to search the back of each User Manual under the Specifications to see whether the camera supports that feature. However, there is a third party software company that expands on this feature for those cameras that are capable. Their website lists the cameras their software will work with, so this provides an instant answer to which models have remote shooting capabilities. Here's their web page with the cameras listed;

i was actually just wanting a remote like the one i just ordered for my XTi, that you can control the shutter without having to actually touch the camera

for $150 bucks, it's hard to have everything. Let's be happy that it at least has manual controls! :)

haha, i'd rather have a remote than manual controls though...

none of the Canon Powershots have that kind of a remote control.

actually some of the Canon Powershots can have that kind of a remote control. You have to install the "CHDK" program and use a wireless RC controller or a USB cable with battery.

Dont know if the 590 has the option, but on the 570 ou can use the delay feature. not sure if that's what you wanted.

Yes it does have a settable delay so if you're trying to initiate a time exposure or something similar that should hopefully suffice.

thanks, i think i'll just use the one on my XTi. I was needing a real remote, wired or wireless for a project I'm doing with some video/photo capture stuff
