Week 3 of my Roller Hockey photography. Just taking some pics of a friend's adult recreational hockey team. It's great practice for me, I'm really new at this. I've had some great suggestions over my last few posts and I really appreciate the advice guys. Keep it coming!

Feel free to look at my photobucket for all of the pics from this night. You can probably see the progression of the last three weeks of shooting hockey.

Great shots. You did good with the WB. That is tough with the crap lighing and the light blue floors. These guys rock. I use to shoot alot of the Michigan Rebels when they played in Cedar Springs. I think they play harder and fight more that the ice boys. Keep up the good work. the hardest thing is getting the glass out of the way, looks like your shooting from the box, done deal. I am thinking picture #7 was a stick to the skate? Good puck stop in the last one. One thing with hockey you'll always have the chance to shoot better. I learn something everytime. What lens were ya using?

Thanks my man. I'm a complete rookie to photography. But I've taken it head on. I shoot something every day. I think my biggest thing that is helping me grow is reading this forum. Thanks again for the help guys.
I'm using a Sigma DG 70-300 on a Rebel XT. I am still shooting hand held, and I know that I was having probs with some camera-shake, and just poor exposure in my first two weeks. Somehow these seemed to come out much clearer. I think a BIG thing was that the opposing team had really nice/bright/yellow jerseys! They really made the pics pop.
Thanks again for the comments guys.

Tokina makes a 50-135mm f/2.8 and Sigma makes a 50-150mm f/2.8. If your roller hockey rink is anything like the ones I used to play at, those are the most ideal lenses for those conditions. The 70-200mm f/2.8's are nice, but it's nice to be able to go a bit wider since the playing surface isn't all that big.
Good shots. The WB looks pretty spot on, and that can be a huge pain in mixed lighting rinks. The composition looks good too. You consider picking up a monopod to help with camera shake? Decent ones from bogen/manfrotto are pretty reasonably priced.

I was thinking of a monopod. Maybe by the next game. Thanks again guys!

Complete rookie? Well you did start off with what I find to be the biggest pain in the rear to shoot. (i'd rather shoot weddings)As for a monopod some guys love them for hockey, as for me I tried it. I mean so many people like them, but I tried it for about one period and dropped the thing on the floor. I use my 75-200IS L2.8. Mode 2. Cant remember all of the setting as hockey has not started again for my son...yet. I have them written down in my bag, same arena everytime, why not write it down, makes the next year easy to remember the settings. I do think what you have is a great beginning to photography. Now when u master hockey move to Moutain Bike races. Another Great challenge.

Yup, complete rookie. I've had my Rebel XT for just shy of a month now. I'm shooting til my CF card smokes! lol. Just trying to learn as much as I can and grow each time I grab my camera. I NEVER thought that there would be so much to it. White Balance, Depth of Field, Aperture, Exposure. All foreign to me about a month ago. lol.
I've always admired my friends in the paintball industry that are amazing photographers. Honestly, I intended to get out there on the field and start shooting. However, I'm too busy playing/practicing/ect when I'm at the fields or at a tournament. So I decided to hit up my old hockey buddies and shoot their games each week.
Enough babble about me. I'm thinking that the mono-pod might be as useful to me as it is to you. But hell, I'll give it a shot. Maybe I'll be one of those who loves it! I've never thought about Mountain Bike races. Sounds like an interesting subject. I really appreciate your post, it's these positive posts that help us NEWBs keep going!
