Hi guys... If you had to choose between these two lenses for use at weddings which one would you?

The main negative point I can think about the 50 1.2L is when I have to shoot the groups shots, probably may be not have enought room space to frame everyone. But for these moments I'll use a 28-135 IS.

Thank you.

Is this going to be your only lens? I've started using all primes and will most likely not be going back to zoom lenses. The 50L is a great lens

Not really... Just sometimes I'll have to use only the 50 1.2L and the 28-135 IS... It's a family studio and sometimes, although rare, we have more than three weddings at the same day... So we were planning on getting another lens. :)

I'd choose the 24-70L.

If you're the main or only shooter. I would choose the 24-70. If you're a 2nd shooter or strictly photojournalist maybe consider the 50L

Depends on the camera you use - big difference between the 27-70 on a 40D and a 5D. With a 1.6 crop camera the best lens would be the 17-55mm f2.8. For the 5D get the 24-70mm f2.8 or the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 which has more reliable autofocus than the Canon zoom.

I'm assuming you will be shooting with the 5D in your sig.

This is a no brainer. You need your basic standard lenses before anything else. The 24-70 is a fast standard zoom that you can shoot an entire wedding with. (provided you get a copy that can actually focus properly at 24mm)

The 50 1.2 on the other hand is more of a specialty lens. Add to that the fact that it lacks a floating element and suffers from focus shift when stopped down, which makes it a poor choice for a primary lens.

I'd chose the 24-70L, for its 45 extra mm. A high-quality standard zoom is the most important lens you can have at a fast-paced shoot like a wedding. The 50L would be a very nice low-light/portrait lens for a second camera or a second shooter but It's not a priority - the 24-70L with a flash and a camera good at high ISOs will mean you'll always be capable of getting the shot.

24-70 without question. I use it for a good 90% of every wedding. If I had to stick with one prime only, it'd be more likely a 35L, but I'd still need something longer for the ceremony/first kiss/first dance. If I was going to use a 50, I'd be more inclined to choose the Canon 50mm f/1.4 or, if it's good, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4.

I agree on the crop factor thing. I have a 24-70 (which I got over the 24-105 due to it's wider aperture)

The only thing that irks me on a crop factor is that it's not true 24mm which is a bummer on group shots.
