I never have. Here's some pictures I took for a friend for her senior pictures in June:

I always use a tripod when shooting seniors. You can view some of my work on my website.

If you're moving around a bunch, a pod will be more trouble than it's worth. Your shutter speed will be high enough not to need it anyway.

It depends what my shutterspeed and focal length is... if the shutter speed is high enough that I feel is comfortable hand-holding my camera I will do it.
