View Full Version : When does G&N become exhibitionism?

Don't get me wrong. I love looking at a beautiful woman tastefully photographed just as much as the next photographer/person. My main reason for being part of this forum is to learn and improve my photography.
However, with the over-abundant posting of photographer's wives/girlfriends, I find myself asking "when does it become exhibitionism"?
Let me clarify... I can understand when a photographer chooses to only photograph his wife/girlfriend for whatever their personal reason may be. That's completely fine. Where I see question is when a photographer continually posts their wife/girlfriend, but are not doing it to improve their photography. Often, I see the same wives/girlfriends posted multiple times a week/day and/or the same image in multiple threads and there is simply no change in the technique from the day, week or month prior. It truly makes me ask why those members do it.
This is not aimed at any one member. I have noticed many do what I am talking about. I enjoy the ones that show how they are learning. I don't enjoy the ones that are simply posting to post.
Am I the only one that feels this is a problem, or are there others who just haven't spoken up about it? Hell, is this even a "problem"? Maybe I'm just nuts.

I know what you mean, I browse to see what's going on, because I plan on doing glamour shots for people eventually (no nudes), and some people are really good at it, but others just post the same work continuously.

I understand where you're coming from and totally agree. That is all I will say. ;)

The G&N section is just like any other share forum on POTN. It is there to let members share their photography - with in the rules that govern G&N. I for one do not think people shot their wives/GF for exibition - at least they are not presented that way.
The same question could be said about the transportation section. On many occassions I have posted different shoots of my car and those of my friends. Does that make me a car exibitionist? Nope it make me photog that enjoys the subject.
Please do not let this thread take a wrong turn where it finds it way to the hauler.

Some people aim to improve their craft with every go and some are happy just to practice it.

I completely fail to see what the problem is?
POTN is largely a photo sharing community, and we just so happen to have a forum that allows members to share photos of thier huisbandswives and partners.
There is no requirment to view those sharing threads or participate in them.
The fact that people do however, I think is fantastic.

I am one who also is new to the G&N... and i must admit I try and photograph whoever i can.. and honestly if i only can find one person comfortable wife or not to pose nude or semi nude for me... i will take it any way i can.
Like any other forum / Thread.. If you don't like seeing someones wife nude don't look. Its not hard to see who the regulars who post the same people over and over again and i feel if you dont want to see it don't look.
I think a good example is Woodster? lol forget his name but you know what he has an apealing wife in my eyes and his photography skills in the nudish/glamour side of things have gotten much better, part of that is comfort on both there parts which only comes from repeated shoots.

There can be any number of reasons why someone would pose nude, and there's no question, exhibitionism might be one of them. There are countless other possible explanations ranging from girlfriends, wives, and acquaintances, all the way to paid, professional models that do it for the money. That 'why' is a standard that we really don't have to get into here.
That question is not nearly as complex as why people take those sorts of photos, and why they choose to share them with others?
None of it matters. If the photos meet our criteria, and the model is of apparent legal age, we're fine with it. The relationship between the model and the photographer is of little concern.

Thanks Michael...that's all I'll say about it...

I would think it just may be a misunderstanding by newer members about what makes a good glam/nude shot. Wifes/girlfriends are easy subjects for the newb (myself included). I used to think that more was better; I still remember my first critique; " an armature porn feel" or something like that was the comment.
I think that this is the only photo sharing forum that most emphasizes studio lighting; you have the people forum, but that seems to be more for snap shots and the like. Perhaps if there was a separate lighting forum in the photo sharing section people would try and focus their energy elsewhere.

I agree some with this, where there are some photogs that post continually but seem to just post and offer no answers to any questions posted, and others that actually post to learn and improve (woodsters is a good example of the latter).
If anything it would appear that the "Holy!" "Damn thats hot!" and requests for more nudity make it appear that some are just here for "free smut" so to say.
I havent got enough posts to post, and I still havent developed a technique that is upto my own standards that I feel comfortable to post in this section, but when I do make my first thread it will be of my wife and Im hoping for more than "Id hit it" replys. Maybe I can follow the same path as some of the others that have grown and developed from their repeated postings here.

Well when you do, if you get that reply, click on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/buttons/report.gif and it will disappear. Those type comments are not allowed, we just need to know that they are made. We can't catch them all alone.

It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. Oh wait. I'm not.
People can post for whatever reason they like. Does the continual sharing of one's child's photos constitute kidshibition, or proud parenthood?

If "Id hit it" replys.
I have yet to see replies like that, some close but borderline.. You find those who post to the G&N Forums are also contributers or like myself try :D But typically you can not post until you have had 500 post or special permissions like myself :D so anyone posting to the G&N have been along long enough to know the rules and its made very clear when entering that you know them and the mods don't put up with crap in there.

As Clara Peller would have said......
"Where's the beef?"
Most models are somewhat of an exhibitionist whether they are naked or not.
Why is this a problem?

I think the thing to remember is that G&N is a Photo Share forum just as much as People, Macro, Transportation, or any other photo sharing forum. Not everyone who posts is asking for critique. They simply want to share their images. If you don't care for that, you don't have to look at the thread.

I think that's the problem. Many of us enjoy sharing, viewing new techniques and learning from or helping others. The problem as I see it is when some members just feel they need to show their wife off on every page and they are not doing it for the sake of improvement. ;)

I still don't see what the problem is.
There is no limit on how many times you can share photos of your wife.
If you really don't like it the G&N forum is set up in such away that you can have access to it removed from your member account. All you need to do is send CDS a PM and ask him nicely.
I am going to close this now, as there really is a no issue here, and nothing to discuss, Tom, Mark and Charles have addressed this perfectly.
