ok so i have this picture of my dad who passed away over 2 years ago. for some reason its one of my favorite pics. it was taken 40 years ago this month. my question to you guys is how can i best recreate this? i know the exact place it was taken so thats not an issue, but do i also take it in a suit? i like wearing them but its not my style. should i take one in something that id be more likely to wear on a daily basis? out of my lenses which would be best suitanle for this type of shot? im sorry about all the questions but this means alot to me and id like the best result possible. heres the original

That is an amazing photo! I think that you should just do it however you want it to look best. If your father always dressed in a suit and that was just his normal apparel, then I think you should wear what you usually wear. But if he got dressed up for the picture, then I think you should as well. I'm so sorry for your loss, I'm going through the same thing, My brother just passed away a year ago in 5 days.

What a awesome idea! Recreating something similar to your father's photo. I don't think you need to wear a suit, but just something casual to recreate this picture. I bet it is going to look awesome.
I look forward to seeing what you have. Also, thank you so much for sharing that photo, it's a beautiful piece.

thank you for the positive comments. sarah im sorry for your loss. as we all know time doesnt really heal but it jus makes the memories that much more precious.
as far as dide he always wear suits well not really. mostly the pants and shirt. im usually in jeans and a tshirt thats jus me but i wonder if that will make the picture less i dunno accurate to the original for lack of a better word.

You know, You could always try both. Bring both sets of clothes and whichever you like more in the end, keep. :)

you take a picture of yourself standing behind the sign, then bring it into this original shot and desaturate it to match the rest of the shot. then you'll have a father and son shot. :)

you might. since the shadows are cast on the area behind your dad, you might need to get the right angle and time of day to get your shadows right (if you know your way around photoshop, you can add the shadows yourself).

Or lightroom already has a preset called "aged photo" that will get you pretty close to the "aged" look of it.

The optimal word here is "Recreate"...do it the way it was shot. Everything from the brown socks - to the cigarette he is holding.
So sorry about your father.
P.S. I love the image...you should think about getting it restored.

Try and get the same time of day, so the shadows will be similar. Great idea! '68 to '08.

Is that stop sign still there? I am assuming this is along the west side highway.
I too think you should do both, suit and no suit and also try one along side to put together.

I love the photo but i would disagree with the restoration - i think its age and look is one of the things that makes it so good.
With regards to the new version - do whatever you feel best with regards to clothes.
With regards to the sign, you could always cut and paste the "stop" into the current photo so long as your heads would be in almost the same place.

Be yourself. You dont need to mimic your father because he was not mimicking someone.
My best advise would be to think in advance which poses you want to do there. be creative, and take enough time for the shooting session so you will not be stressed and you will have plenty of time to recreate the event. I think you will need a couple hours to fully enter the situation and starting giving good pictures.
If you do it in a minute, there is great chance the result will disappoint you.

Personally I'd probably use a tripod and timer and do it myself. Or you could have the other person stand in the right position, figure out all the proper settings and composition (on tripod), and then they just have to push the shutter release.
Lens will depend on where you are going to be shooting from, I imagine either 17-40 or 70-200 will be good. Are you trying to recreate exactly the perspective?

You cannot expect good things from a non-photographer. a camera is like a car. Its easy to use when you know, but you cannot explain these "easy things" in a minute.

i was thinking of recreating the exact picture. but someone here pointed out that my dad wasnt copying anyone and just being himself. so im thinking of taking the picture with my own flavor shall we say. my own way of dressing only thing i will copy is the location and the pose. sort of like a then and now and how times have changed. im also considering going through one on the rush hours so i can get the cars in the background to also show how those have changed

Good luck with the shot, let us know if/when you post it. Perhaps in this thread?

There are two approaches you can take. One is to recreate the image a closely as possible, suit, pose and all. The 2nd approach is to take it at the same location in your own style. Why don't you do both?

great project. I can't wait to see the result!
just curious - any idea what was going on when this image was originally taken? who was the one behind the camera and why a camera came into play in the first place? I can't imagine that this was a posed shot that was pre-planned at the time - it seems so natural and spontaneous ...

That's a great photo and I think you're doing well to try to recreate it. If it were me, I would wear the suit and try to get as close to the original as possible. You can take a few more with or without the suit to make it your own as well. I hope you'll post the results for us to see.

if i were you i would rereate the pic exactly like your dad and then use photoshop to make the picture kind of old.. although then you're gonna have an old looking picture with modern cars in the background! hehehe..
btw, your dad sure got style back then =)
may he rest in peace.
