View Full Version : Just curious: any other ladies here?

Racing photography is mostly a male centered world, but there are few of us, women, out there shooting too. So just out of curiosity: are there any other ladies here?

I personally do not know how many female M'sports photog here on POTN, but I have seen several on shooting the circuits in the Southeast United States.

Thanks for your reply, Jamie. Yeah, I guessed there weren't many women here, but figured there wouldn't be any harm in asking.
Okay, sorry for the off topic thread guys, back to regular programming ;)

Hi there!! I'm here... I do a fair amount of sports photography... I live in Canada and the racing world is a little different here, but I shoot photos for the local track for a few months each year... And I'm always the only female photographer there and the only female photographer I've seen on the side lines at football games here too....

Hi there! *waves* Nice to hear from you :) Yeah, it's quite similar here in Estonia - while there are hundreds of female motorsport fans with cameras, besides me there's only one other woman photographer shooting car racing and two ladies who shoot bikes. But I don't mind being "one of the guys" - we all love racing and that's what matters.

Theres a couple of women who shoot F1, no idea of names but have seen them walking around the circuits .
I think theres one who works for GEPA who shoots all our photos.
A couple who cover the GNCC in the states and a fair few who do club reporting for TMX in the UK (me being one of them)

Hi Tessa, sorry my fault, I didn't explain properly!
TMX- Trials and Motocross News (with enduro) I used to cover Motocross and moved on to enduro.
I use a couple of dirtbike forums which are frequented by the editorial staff of the 4 main dirtbike magazines. There's a lot of race reports that get posted every weekend and practice photos mid week on there. Mine got noticed and I've done bike tests (photos , not riding!) race reports and general photos for Dirtbike Rider and Trailbike and Enduro for the last couple of years, not on a grand scale but enough that I've been asked to cover other things by a couple of teams and organisations.
Theres only one person who does Enduro photojournalism for a living and thats Jonty Edmunds who cover WEC, Brit Champs, GNCC in the states and just about every bike event. He also does a lot for KTM.
I'd like to move to 4 wheels but be attached to a team for a year, I'm not just interested in the racing photos, but the build and behind the scenes/pitlane ones which is what , apparently, made my photos stand out at Enduro..it appeared no one really did this.
I work in motorsport so I doubt I'd want to do it full time anyway, I enjoy my job, paid good money and have good working hours that allow me do do as I wish at weekends and some mid week...best of both worlds.
Tessa

No problem, thank you for the explanation :) Sound like you're having a great time, very cool!
I mostly shoot cars so unfortunately I don't have much time for bikes, but the few times I've had a chance to shoot them it's been a blast - so I complete understand why you love them. *note to self - more motocross!*
I've been working for a car magazine for a few years now and shoot all kinds of racing, mostly cars though. I'm not a big fan of asphalt events, but any kind of race run on gravel, dirt, sand, mud etc. gets my vote :D Actually I don't even mind the hard surface, as long as there's plenty of action.

Out of the 4 tracks in NB and NS that I phoned, non of them every remember having a female photographer at the track in all the years that they have been opened... The track that I shoot at has never had a female photographer until I came along..

Great pics, craftgirl and Arctica. I've never shot oval racing before simply because there aren't any oval tracks here - but I'd love to try it. Now motocross I have shot a couple of times and love it, unfortunately I rarely have time for it :( Still, I'm not complaining, other types of racing (mainly rallying) keep me quite busy.
I do have a question for you all: do you shoot with one camera and change lenses, or use two cameras? I've been thinking about getting another camera body to have one short and one long lens quickly at hand.

Thanks Tessa! Shooting in the pits at an oval is tough, I have found, you have to be in the right turn to get the money shots...I don't always get the kind of freedom of movement at the tracks that the other guys do (media platforms etc..), that's why I focus on pit stops and "sportraits". One of these days when I get REAL credentials I will be able to hone my skills on the real racing!
I have had the opportunity to shoot with two cameras, one with a long lens and one with a wide and definitely prefer it. There is so much risk involved with having to stop and change lenses on concrete. My greatest fear is dropping something rushing to switch...SCARY!

Buds Creek is supposed to be an awesome track and you have the talent that is Villapoto and Stewart riding there!
I'm more into Enduro these days especially the extreme stuff (not too much of that in the British Isles though! ) but really want to shift over to four wheels.
Next year I'd like to work with a Britcar team, not necessarily a front running team, more mid order. Stay with them from pre season testing, carbuild/assembly through to racing. I'm happy to fund my own way around the UK, its just approaching someone!
I'm also more into the 'sportrait' (I love that word!) side of it. Racing photos are great but I like to see how people work , their highs and lows etc.
Get over to Buds..you won't regret it!

I did that at the Britcar 24 in the dark. Luckily (as lucky as it can be) my 550ex took the brunt of the fall and split from the hotshoe. £100 to repair..better than the 40d I guess!

My boss's son is a little guy but races motocross...Dad is adamant about getting me to Budds next weekend. The kid is doing a pretty good job and I figure that shooting the kids would be great practice for the big boys.
A good friend of mine was the Chief Mechanic for Andrew Short before he moved on...It would be cool to head to the track with him to learn a little more about how the sport works...
"I'm also more into the 'sportrait' (I love that word!) side of it. Racing photos are great but I like to see how people work , their highs and lows etc."
My goal is to show the truest nature of the man (or woman if I ever get the chance...), I love catching them with their guard down. Of course I dont post them with their eyes closed or their mouths gaping...lol. I love clinched jaws, big laughs and goofy smiles. I think people want to see these guys at their most human...and it's a challenge...

Yeah, I have a similar plan - 40D for the 70-200 and get another body for the short zoom - often it's just too much hassle to keep changing lenses.
It was a nightmare changing lenses before especially on sand tracks. Riders have an inbuilt need to roost photogs!
Too true  I co-drive for a friend on some rallies, and when he notices cameras, he turns on his "show-off-mode" and leaves some impressive dirt clouds. Great for pictures, not so good for gear

Well, I had an exciting event this weekend, the last championship rally of the season. Weather was bad but the action more than made up for it - huge number of crazy moments... The gallery is here (http://recce.pri.ee/album144/fotod.html).

Arctica,
I hope the group blooms! It might take a while but we're off to a good start...lol
I am so excited, I have just purchased my plane ticket to Miami for the Nascar Homestead championship weekend in November! Last year was a blast so I am hoping this year will be just as great. Getting the chance to shoot a championship win was one of the most exciting moments in my photography adventures...
Anyone else have an exciting gig coming up?
That sounds like some fun hard work! :D

Well it sounds more exciting than mine!
Off to the concrete jungle loving known as Silverstone:lol: Probably the last decent meeting of the season to attend as I'm away the weekend of the Walter Hayes.
Other than that I'm planning a day at the Wales Rally GB (Lombard RAC to us Oldies:oops:) but its not until Dec.. Tessa I'll need some Rally photog tips as yours are always excellent:)
Been asked to cover a MTB event which is oragnised by a dirtbike club, so the guys won't be able to twist the throttle on the hills:lol:

Hi,
We've got at least three or four ladies in Australia who regularly get out to most of the major V8 Supercar rounds and I've seen some at other sports events.
Haven't noticed them on here but I've not been here very long myself

I am cold and bored to tears...mid-off season with-drawl is nearing it's breaking point...lol
It would be super to bring this thread back to life....

Yep, still here and still shooting :D Last night was an offroad event in pitch black conditions, played around with off camera flash - and realized I need a few more voice activated bio-powered biped flash stands ;)
Today no racing action, but went to see a Light Festival fire sculpture display. Next weekend - a rally, then either sprint or cross. Can't wait :)

Hey Tessa,
Good to see that you are out there! I wish I could be one of your voice activated bio-powered biped flash stands, but alas, we are an ocean apart....:(
I would love to see what you got last night. And hope you will share what you get next weekend. I have nothing coming up except for my tax refund...praying there will be enough to buy back a basic kit. sigh...But...if that does happen, there is rodeo and motocross in the future.

Here's one of the pictures from last night (full set is in the gallery link at my sig); used Cactus V2s stuff to trigger the flashes:

It's been quite slow here race-wise for the past month or so, but the season is now starting up again. I'm just wishing for more snow... And yeah, it would be great to get together for a fun shoot - too bad teleportation is still just a sci-fi dream :)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your tax refund - here's hoping for the best!

Nice images Tessa, hope you've thawed out?
Thanks :) I had my winter shooting kit on so I kept toasty warm - experience has taught me to never ever wear jeans in below freezing weather, since they feel like icy leadpipes after ten minutes
Now that I have the Cactus trigger set I'm trying to learn more about off camera flash - to use in racing conditions and also for paddock/pit/portrait type stuff. It's fun to try new things.

I'm still here... Just waiting for racing to start again.... I'm also hoping that there will be a few snow machine races this year at the local track.... They tried to do it last year but it warmed up to much...

Not a lady, but if I can be allowed to crash the party long enough to say I've known of four lady drag race photographers. One used to shoot with me at our local track (she was/is a better photographer than I am), another shoots motorcycles for the PMRA, one shoots with her husband in their sports photography business, and one shoots nostalgia drag racing around the country. I wish my wife would develop the interest.

Well, didn't go to the rally, but still had a busy weekend: a press conference (for an autosport yearbook) on Friday, sprint on Saturday and cross (cars/sidecars) on Sunday.
Sunday was really dark... used the 70-200 with 1.4x extender and had to go over ISO 1000 occasionally, but it was still fun. Those sidecar guys are nuts!

Racing photography is mostly a male centered world, but there are few of us, women, out there shooting too. So just out of curiosity: are there any other ladies here?
Male centered pfft :) Heaps of us over in this neck of the woods... well there is me for a start! lol

Very nice shots - and beautiful bikes. Do you shoot mostly two-wheelers or cars too? Just track or some gravel type events?
And what have you other ladies been up to? :) I had another busy weekend, this time motocross/atv/quad enduro and cars on ice.

A couple of friends were riding yesterday at one of the few events which failed to give in to the snow... Well it was run by the RAF and I think the Army boys would of given them no end of grief if it had been cancelled:lol:
Didn't take many photos too busy helping people up the climbs or just picking bikes up from sheer exhaustion from the rider (and me by the end of the day!)
Not one open bit of going, all in the forestry and a mix of very dark peat but it was good to finally get out and am now looking forward to Le Touquet beach race in a couple of weeks.
Couple of 'forumites' from our website.

Great shots, looks like a really tough course - no wonder you spent most of the time helping fallen and/or tired riders.
What kind of event is the beach race? Sounds nice... well, maybe not in this weather

I've only been to the Weston-super-mare beach race in the UK , but basicallly 1000 riders on the start with a manmade course of 30 odd foot high dunes/jumps/whoops/berms and long backstraights (great for panning and wheel motion !)
Great environment for expensive canon equipment...not!
Carnage, basically unless you are the elite front few and even then that doesn't guarantee an easy run.
Le Touquet is just down from Calais so a quick hop over on the Eurotunnel for me. Plus the event is organised by ASO who run the Dakar rally and theTour de France so it can't fail to be a top class event.

Hi there :)
I am new to this site and I enjoy motorsports! I just got my first DSLR for Christmas and my husband bought me a new 55-250mm lens for Valentines day with a hood. I got to shoot at Firebird Raceway in Arizona over this past weekend. It was AWESOME. I need more practice but here are a couple of the photos I took :)
