The West Valley fire department (Volunteer) had a planned burn of a house in an orchard the other night. I found out about it by seeing the flames from miles away. By the time I got out there, it was dying down and not in its full glory. However,I was able to capture some images that I enjoyed. I hope you like tham and any comments are always appreciated.

Nice fireground shots... make certain you offer copies to the department, they'll love them! (I was a FF for 9 years, I know :-))

Great Job! All 4 are very good. Definitely get the guys at the firehouse a disc. They will love them.

Love these! Any chance you'll share the technique on how you got them?

I have printed some of these out and will show them to a couple of the firefighters. Unfortunately my technique on finding the fire was not so nefarious as inside information. I saw the flames from miles away and did my best to get over there. Once over there I used the 70-200 IS on the 1DmkII @ ISO 500 and began shooting away. The IS was key as some of these shots were as slow aas 1/30 a sec. All were shot in manual mode and generally I exposed for the flames. I was consistantly over by a couple of stops but that was in order to get some foreground definition. With the blinking lights of the fire engines, I new I would be over so I tried to find a neutral color, like the jackets the firefighters wear, and expose for how I wanted it to look. A little dark so the lights would have a little definition etc.
Thanks for the comments. I will try to answer any other questions.

Really nice shots! Maybe you could offer prints or a disk to the dept. in return fora model releases. There are a couple of fire fighter mags that might be interested in your shots.

Great shots. I particularly like the last one, with the firefighter outlined (I can't spell shilou... sillhoue... silh... you know what I mean ;)).

Interesting idea. On those that you can recognize the person I would need a release but not sure about the others. Probably better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for the look.

Thank you. Silhouette is not the easiest word to spell. I had to check it to make sure.:D
