There are two types of shutters; the focal plane shutter, traditionally employed in 35mm cameras and is placed in the camera body between the mirror assembly and the film/sensor. The second is a leaf shutter and is used in larger formats. It is placed in the lens and resembles a diaphragm. One of the advantages of the leaf shutter (back in the film and mechanical shutter days) was a higher sync speed, typically 1/500 sec. when the max. for 35mm was 1/60 sec. I understand the new Leica S2 employs both.

I think the new Leica S2 mentioned dual shutters, some lenses have a shutter in side of them.

Is dual shutter system used only in larger formats?

Most cameras use only one system. The only large format camera that I know of and used that had two systems was the Speed Graphic 4x5 (an old press camera that is a blast to use). Every medium and large format camera(save for the example above) I shot with had a leaf shutter. I still use a Hasselblad 500C and Sinar P 4x5 only now they have a phase one P45 on the back but they use lenses with leaf shutters. The Leica S2 is the first in a long time to employ a dual system.

Staffer,
Can both systems be used independently?

Staffer,

Yes, actually I can't imagine using them at the same time. I believe Leica designed a dual system camera to employ the advantages of both types of shutter

I should also include that smaller cameras use leaf shutters as well (ie. point and shoot)

I have a Hasselblad 2000FC that has a metal focal plane shutter that will also take & use the Hasserblad lenses with shutters built in. The focal plane shutter is open when using lenses with built in shutters.
