What is the largest photo forum on the Internet in terms of number of users and number of daily posts?

DerekRob

If I had to venture a guess I would say DPReview although personally I haven't been to the forums in years.

FM and photo.net seem to have more volume. Haven't spent much time on Nikonians but they're big as well.

A year or more ago in a discussion here on POTN in the Forum Talk forum, I remember seeing a link to a chart or website or something that showed the size of forums, posts, etc. POTN was not first on the chart. For one, I think that photo.net is larger.

But I must say this in all honesty. I have belonged to and still belong to other forums, large and small, and I have found that by far, POTN is the most useful. By that I mean this: I have acquired more knowledge and have been advanced further here on POTN. There seems to be a higher level of knowledge and experience among participants here than on other forums.

In addition, and the key to it all, there seems to be more willingness to share that knowledge among users here. Other forums often have this feeling of people playing poker, holding cards close to their chest. Something is posted you are interested in, you ask about the who, what, when, where, and why and are met with silent answers.

Use other forums, look at galleries, study the work of others - that's what you should be doing. But when your quest involves seeking and sharing knowledge, do it here.

(And please, spare me the comments about "butt-kissing." ;) That's not the intent of this post. Instead, if you disagree with my assessment tell me who, what, when, where, and why - share the knowledge.)

It is POTN, by far.

http://www.big-boards.com/board/1423/

The average here looks to be about 5,000 to 6,000 posts per day. Photo.net lists on their home page "3000+ posts per day." You could also look at new member stats to determine the largest but I'd say they'd be the same. I like FM, too, but it isn't even in the same league for traffic.

Well, stats are always a funny thing. It depends upon how you look at them and what is the evaluating criteria.

Using this link (http://www.big-boards.com/kw/photography).

Using number of posts, DP review come up ahead of POTN,

Sorted by number of members, DP review and deviant art is ahead. However, IMHO deviant art is not an equal comparison - it incorporates other sectors

You're right; I wasn't sure if DPR published stats or not. If you look at their detail page, they are doing over 10,000 posts per day, so DPR is the busiest. Personally, I find it annoying to navigate and can't spend long there.

Ya know, size is not everything, it's the quality that counts.

Agreed. As I said above, knowledge of participants plus level of experience = quality.

I think this one is better.

Photo.net seems to have an undercurrent of anti digital

Most likely dpreview. There are often 2000 users logged in here, but at the same time there's probably 20,000 on dpreview.

I wouldn't call it anti-digital so much as pro film.

Fine distinction I know, but I see it as different.

I think it depends upon how you measure it.......
http://www.big-boards.com/highlight/1423/

I didn't sift through to analyze all rankings, but it looks like DPReview is bigger overall.

But, hey, POTN is the best.

I think most here have visited the others, and there's a reason we all keep posting here.

HuskyKMA

POTN currently has 1,699 user online, nearly seven hundred of them are members. The record is over 4,300 users at once. If you ask me, that's plenty.

Besides, not the number of members or posts, it's the quality of the experience. And POTN wins in that category hands down.

I was a member on Dpreview when I had my Sony cybershot, lots of people were helpful on that area of the forum. I would think that with all the different types of camreas and manufacturers that it would be the "biggest". But I agree with the fact that Dpreview is hard to navigate and that black background kills my eyes.

Dpreview is the biggest photo forum. Currently it has 23 million posts and 592,000 members. So by post count it is about 4 times bigger than POTN. This is much based on time it has been before POTN. But, based on weekly posts we are catching amazingly fast, POTN weekly public posts are 45,000 and dpreview 76,000. FM is now smaller by post count (even if they have reviews in forum, too), and we get twice as many new posts each day now, so I estimate FM gets about 20,000 posts a week. FM has now 178,500 members and we 165,800 so I bet we'll catch them in that area soon. Photo.net says they have 3000+ posts daily, so weekly posts counts are about half of POTN. I don't know Nikon Cafe numbers - who cares! :)

Dpreview info is in http://www.big-boards.com/board/246/
POTN info is in http://www.big-boards.com/board/1423/
Photo.net says 3000+ daily posts in http://photo.net/community/

But I must say, I don't compete with other forums. The competition I have is POTN against POTN - how to make it better and better and keep it fun. Stay tuned.

I find it easy to navigate, much easier than here to move to different forums. Plus I enjoy the black. It is much easier on my eyes than a white webpage. This is one reason why the default background in AutoCAD is black - it's better and easier on the viewer's eyes.

I guess it's what you are used to. I like vBulletin and pHpBB style message boards..
