Softbox or Umbrella?

What do yall use?


It seems as if Softboxes are better for shooting this type of photography when only 1-2 people.


I just bought my first off-camera setup [285HV + 45" umbrella, etc]


I wanted to go with 28" softbox, but can't afford right now.


What do yall think? :)

take a look at the "Studio lighting online videos" in my sig and at the "cheap vs expensive softbox"video, softbox are not that expensive after all.

I use 1x 2' softbox. 1x 5' octobox and one ring light. I need 2 other stobes...

I use 60" umbrella's all the time for G&N. Put them close to your model and you get a nice wrap around effect.

as long as i'm careful where i'm putting them, i've had nothing but luck with my 40" umbrellas in front of my genesis 200s. i do have softboxes for work though, and i'd much rather have those.

I usually bounce with large brollies, and shoot through the smaller ones.

Softboxes and octoboxes for me, along with the every now and then beauty dish for rim lighting.

Mark, have you ever shot through your 60" umbrella? I'm currently using a 33" and want to upgrade to a bigger size, but was thinking of only going to a 45". What is the size you shoot through?

Honestly, I've never shot through the big ones. I usually use two at once as reflectors. My shoot through brollies are 42".

two softboxes works for me, elinchrome d-lite 4's to be exact. :)
