Teleconverter

I just purchased a Sigma 70-200/2.8 and am looking into a teleconverter to increase the reach.

My questions are:

would you recommend a 1.4 or 2.0. I'm goin to try wildlife shots and maybe some far off landscape shots (like nyc from across the river).

where does the tc go? does it attach to the body and the lens attaches to the tc? or does the lens go to the body and the tc on the end?

i'm reading the sticky regarding the compatibility of what TC for what lens, but i might come back with some questions on that too.

The T-con goes between the Camera and the lens.

You will get much more acceptable image quality with the 1.4X t-cons... On a good fast lens the 1.4X is hardly noticeable,.

...the 2X on the other hand can seriously degrade image quality,. I found in particular the quality if the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX with a 2X was not too good. It's not a bad thing to have the 2X as well to use in a pinch and get that 400mm .. but you won't want to rely on it all the time.

Again,. the 1.4X is a different story,. you will love that lens with the 1.4X

The other point to consider is that the 1.4X TC will cost you one f/stop. The 2X will cost you 2 full f/stops. When you spend all that money for a high quality lens, it's a shame to handicap it by restricting its ability to transmit light.

Anyone know offhand how much the lens weighs? I'm wondering it my tipod will support it; it supports up to 6.63 pounds according to B&H where I bought it last weekend.

Your Sigma lens weights about 3.06 pounds, and the 1.4X TC from Canon weighs .49 lbs.
